Interesting question. Please note just like the professional course CA, CS is also governed by a board and has 3 rounds that students need to clear before they claim to be a professional.
Thus a student will have to register with The INDIAN INSTITUTE OF COMPANY SECRETARY after class 10th. After clearing 12th you would appear for the preliminary exam. After that the further levels. Check the institute for more details.
Since CS is not a degree, better if a degree is accompanied to support. Since CS deals with law and taxation, a degree in LAW would be an added advantage.

1. Company Secretary as a professional qualification is equivalent to a Masters degree. UGC has recognised CS as a masters degree equivalence and students can also take up PhD on this basis. However, since this is masters equivalent, doing a graduation degree formally is required to be done. Industry, also does not recognise CS candidates without a basic graduation degree. Further, if you wish to do LLB, you need a bachelors degree first, since LLB three years course is a post graduate degree course.
2. Foundation, Executive and Professional are the three levels to be cleared along with Articleship of one year to become an Associate of Company Secretaries of India.
3. The exact name is The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) established under the Company Secretaries Act, 1980.
4. Company Secretary course does not deal with taxation majorly. But it deals with Secretarial Practice and Company Law and other Business Laws.
