Dear Aspirant,

Company Secretary and Personnel / Personal Secretary are NOT the same. They are very very different than each other. However Company Secretary profession evolved from Personal Secretary profession.

Company Secretary is a statutory / legal position in a company (corporate) whereas Personal Secretary is NOT a legal or statutory position and is actually a position for assisting an individual may be a business man, minister or a busy person.

The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is constituted under an Act of Parliament i.e. the Company Secretaries Act, 1980 (Act No. 56 of 1980). ICSI is the only recognized professional body in India to develop and regulate the profession of Company Secretaries in India. The Institute of Company Secretaries of India awards the certificate of bestowing the designation of Company Secretary (CS) to a candidate qualifying for the membership of the Institute.

Stages to become a Company Secretary:

The student who would like to join the Course after 10+2 pass or equivalent has to undergo three stages to pursue the Company Secretaries Course i.e.
- Foundation Programme
- Executive Programme
- Professional Programme

The Student who would like to join the Course after passing the Graduation has to undergo two stages of the Company Secretaryship i.e.
- Executive Programme
- Professional Programme

Foundation Programme which is of eight months duration can be pursued by 10+2 pass or equivalent students of Arts, Science or Commerce stream (Excluding Fine Arts)

Executive Programme can be pursued by a Graduate of all streams except Fine Arts.
Professional Programme can be pursued only after clearing the Executive Programme of CS Course

ADMISSION TO THE CS COURSE is open throughout the year. Examinations are held twice a year in June & December.

SUBJECTS FOR CS COURSE
There are 4 papers in CS Foundation Programme
There are 7 papers divided into 2 Modules in CS Executive Programme (wef. 01.02.2013)
There are 8 papers divided into 4 Modules in CS Professional Programme

Hello Mayur,
Welcome to career guide.com
Thanks for writing us your career query.

From your question it seems you are completely unaware about the Company Secretary Course.Company Secretary course is a professional course which is completely different from personnel secretary.Don't go with the name of the course by assuming that it means the work of Personnel Secretary.

Company Secretary is a profession that deals with the legal department of the company and looks for all the legal issues and matters of the companies. The Company Secretary course is offered by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India i.e ICSI. On this note my colleague Mr. Anand has explained it very well.

CS is a very demanding and prestigious profession. Its the profession which have a great importance same like CA,CMA in the companies.

In order to become a CS professional one can apply for the course either after 12th or after garduation degree-

Stages After 12th

1.CS FOundation Course.
2.CS Executive Programme.
3.CS Professional Programme.

Stages After Graduation

After Graduation one do not need to give the CS Foundation course exam. one can apply directly to CS Executive Programme and after clearing it one can go for CS Professional Programme.

Apart from this the student also needs to go for the internship programmme of 15 months after CS Executive Programme and the IT training also and after that you get eligible to go for CS Professional Programme.

In order to apply for CS after 12th you need to register yourself with ICSI chapter nearby to your area while you are pursuing your 12th std.

Dear Mayur,

My colleagues have explained the difference between Company Secretary and Personal Secretary as well as process of becoming CS or PS.

I would like to provide information about PS. PS has scope in Government as well as Corporate sector. To become a PS in corporate, you require graduation in any field, knowledge of IT and computer use, short hand and audio typing skills are advantageous. Basic knowledge or fluency in other languages can be favourable. Diploma courses in business management would add value to your job in corporate sector.

You can get Govt job as PS through competitive exams. For government job, govt recognized Computer Concept Course and stenography course is mandatory in addition to graduation.

Now review your strengths, weakness and yoyr career aspirations. Both CS and PS are valuable career options. Of course, CS is reputed job compared to PS.

If you are able to crack CS exam, then go for it. Systematic efforts will help you become CS.

Wish you best wishes for your career,
