The academic record and professional training matters alot while looking for a job as dentist. Admission to the dentistry course is through an admission test conducted at all India level. The BDS course is of four years duration and is open to students who have completed class plus two or equivalent examination with the the subjects physic, chemistry and biology
. The four years course is followed by one year of compulsory rotating internship, The admission test evaluates the candidate's knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology studied till class 12 or equivalent. There is at least one dental college in most states. Dental surgeons are employed by state governments and the central government in hospitals, medical colleges and dispensaries under their aegis. The railways, defense sector , banks and public , private sector units also employ dentists in the hospitals/ medical centers set up by them for their employees. There is alot of scope in private practice for general as well as specialized dental treatments. Salaries in government and public sector hospitals are governed by scales available to all class 1 officers, but the remuneration from private practice are very high. Continuing professional education in this field is vital for all dentists to keep pace with ongoing developments
