Hello, i just graduated with a diploma in fashion design from south delhi polytechnic for women, i was looking to do a course ahead based on how to launch my own brand name but am slightly disoriented need guidance

Congratulations for graduating with a diploma.


I would suggest that if you wish to launch your own brand, just going in for a course will not give you much. Rather it would be better to take up a job with any of the known brand. Working there, will give you practical things like, understanding the consumer, marketing strategies, budgeting, promotions, hiring employees etc. Once you are clear about all these aspects and have a good amount of experience of about 2 - 3yrs, then if you launch your own brand I am sure it will be a great success.

Fashion designing is one of the most lucrative, appealing, glamorous, and exciting career options in today's world. If you have a penchant for creativity, style and originality, a career in fashion designing is the one tailor made for you. On one hand, the fashion industry satisfies bothe the creative fancies and the materialistic needs of the people. On the other hand, it promises glamour, fame, success and high pay package to the talented people.

However, it is also a demanding career, as fashion designer need to combine their creativity with managerial skills in oreder to sustain in this industry. Thus, if you can create magic with colours, shapes and designs, then just obtain a professional course to begin a suceesful career in the alluring world of fashion designing.


Course to be pursued in Fashion Designing:
After graduation, you can apply for one of the following courses into a field of fashion design:
1. Post Graduate Diploma in Fashion Design
2. MBA in Fashion
3. M. Des in Fashion Design.


Required Skills / Personal Qualities:
Fashion designers to need to have following skills:
1. To be creative
2. An eye for colour, texture and pattern
3. The ability to visualize things in three dimensions
4. Technical skills in areas such as pattern cutting, grading and garment construction
5. To be able to draw, either by hand or on the computer
6. Good communication skills to explain their ideas clearly and persuasively.
7. the ability to meet deadlines and work within a budget
8. Business skills and commercial awareness, particularly if they are self employed
9. Good negotiation skills when selling their own designs
10. To keep ahead of trends in colour, fabric and style.
11. Strong organizational skills.


Job Prospects:
In India, the fashion industry has just begun to come of age, as it is still in its fledgling stage. This industry offers plenty of opportunities for talented hard working and enthusiastic people. Prospects for fashion design graduates are pretty good thanks to the huge and still growing demand for "Designer Wear" and the equally outsized quantity of exports.

After successful completion of the course, you can remain self employed. Alternatively, several export houses, garment store chains, textile mills, leather companies, boutiques, fashion show organizers, jewellery houses and media houses recruit professionals interested in a career in fashion designing.

Those interested in a career in fashion designing can also become entrepreneurs and form their own compenies.

Note: As a fresher, it would be advisable, to take up some industry experience throug jobs before launching up you own brand.
