An ophthalmologist is a medically trained doctor who commonly acts as both physician and surgeon. S/he examines, diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries in and around the eye. The majority of ophthalmologists are surgical ophthalmologists. Most of their day is spend seeing patients in outpatient clinics with many requiring follow up of an ongoing condition. Although patients often have conditions relating to ageing such as cataract, glaucoma and macular degeneration, diseases of the eye and its surrounding structures may be part of an underlying systematic disease e.g. diabetes. Therefore they work in collaboration with many other specialist including re hematologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, ENT and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, pediatricians and geneticists. They perform surgical procedures such as cataract extraction, squint and glaucoma surgery, oculoplastic and nasolacrimal surgery. Ophthalmologist see patients of all ages and a wide range of conditions, however people usually specialize in one or several areas that allow them to work in certain environment. Pediatric ophthalmologists are trained in pediatrics and focus on children and infant vision
. Lasik surgeons are ophthalmologist who have specialized training in neurology, optic pathways and trauma. There are plenty of subspeciality areas such as the ones mentioned, which allow ophthalmologists to refine their skills and even their everyday work regrading the patients they handle.
