Hi,

Let us first understand what they do actually. Astronomer is a scientist who studies celestial bodies such as black holes, moons, planets, stars, nebulae and galaxies, as well as Gamma ray bursts and cosmic microwave back ground radiation. A related but distinct subject, cosmology, is concerned with studying the universe as a whole. An astronomer reaches the world beyond earth.

Passion for any profession is the only key to success . If you are passionate about certain subject you will never see what you can not do , rather will always focus on what you like to do in that field. Astronomers are very passionate about their field .

Professional astronomers are highly educated individuals who have Ph.D in physics or astronomy and are employed by research institutes and universities.

They spend the majority of their time working on research although they quite often have other duties such as teaching, building instruments or helping in the operation of an observatory.

This field is popular among amateurs. some of the cities have clubs where they meet on a regular basis and often host star parties. They are very ambitious and own science grade telescope and instruments with which they make their own discoveries and assist professional astronomers in research.

They spend most of their times working in an office environment. Some times they may need to spend considerable hours in observatories where they can gather data by looking through telescopes but the internet has made it possible for them to do a lot of their observation work remotely . Most of them work full time and sometimes have to work irregular hours. As space is best observable at night, working at night is some times necessary.

So you can see that there are various types of work which an Astronomer does. Some times he spends long hours working in the lab and some times he doesn't. I hope you must have understood the way they work and how they work. Still if you have any more questions , you can ask me , i am there to help you. Wish you success in your career.
