Finance is one of the fastest growing profession across the world and with a huge demand supply gap in India , the youngsters planning a career in finance have a bright future and can take advantage of many opportunities coming across in the financial services industry.

Acquiring an appropriate professional qualification is the first step towards a successful career. A bachelor's degree in commerce of economics is a good starting point. To become a professor of finance management one must have a post graduate degree in finance preferably followed by PhD. However several other qualifications like CA, CFA etc also make a person eligible to take up the role of associate professor in prestigious business schools. In order to widen knowledge and diversify skills , most students opt for two professional courses. Some of the top institutes offering post graduation in Finance are :-

Indian Institute of management Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Lucknow, Kozhikode

Faculty of management Studies New Delhi

SP Jain Institute of management Mumbai

TA Pai Institute of management Manipal

Institute of Chartered Accountants of India New Delhi

Dear aspirant

Thank you for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com. I appreciate your interest in finance teaching career and i can certainly guide you step by step on how to become a professor in finance management.

To become a professor the most eligible educational qualification is a PhD in Finance management and i will brief here how to get to that state.

  • Pass 10th class with a over all minimum first class and should have compulsorily studied maths.

  • Pass 12th class with a overall minimum first class and again maths is compulsory here. Students can be from any group like PCMB, Computer science or even commerce. However maths should be compulsorily studied.

  • Pass a minimum bachelors level degree and obtain a minimum first class. This bachelors degree can be any degree actually, either a three year bachelors like the BA/ BSC/ BCOM/ BBA or even a four year bachelors degree like the BENG/ BTECH. Students who did Bcom with finance or BBA with finance can easily reach to professor roles in future. Passing any degree with a minimum 60% is essential for students outside reservation quota and passing with a minimum 55% is required for students within reservation quota.

  • Then pursue a two year masters course and most often students are required to choose either MCom with finance, MFM Master of financial management or even a MSc Finance from abroad. Students should also get a minimum first class in this masters degree. After this they can appear for UGC NET/ UGC SET/ UGC LEC and start lecturer jobs in colleges. Some students also prefer to do an MBA in Finance and then write the UGC exams to be qualified for a lecturer.

  • The last step is the Doctorate professional research degree known as the PhD level. In India, to go to a PhD level, an MBA as a masters degree is also acceptable. To be eligible to apply for a PhD, students should write CAT/ GATE/ GMAT exam to be eligible for applying PhD Management with Finance. Also UGC NET/ CSIR in Management/ UGC LEC in Management are mandatory. With these qualifications you can apply for a PhD Finance management or PhD Management with finance. Completing the PhD you are directly qualified to work as an assistant professor initially and after at least three years of experience, you can be promoted to a professor role. All the best.
