Food technology is the study of science related to processing of food stuffs. This processing involves the preservation of fruits, vegetables, juices and beverages, meat products, manufacturing of confectionery, snacks, and preserved food stuffs as well as packaging of these products for marketing.

Nature of Work:

Food technologists also known as Food Scientist are involved in food processing, preservation of fruits, vegetables, dairy products. The main jobs are as:



  • Research for devising for new and improved foods techniques


  • Guiding the processing, conservation and preservation of processed food for long time


  • Creating new food stuffs generated from animal and plant sources


  • Improving existing techniques for economizing the processing


  • Adding values, creating new tastes, for providing impetus to marketing to make the product successful


  • Evolving processes such as control of infestations of insects, fungi, bacteria and other pests


  • Examination of food stuffs for contamination, adulteration, food value, nutritional values by using biochemical, chemical and microbiological methods


  • developing new methods and processes for producing new taste of foods, without deterioration the quality and nutritional values of food


  • Use of processes such as blending and antioxidant etc to improve the shelf life of the food product

The food technologist is also concerned with the taste, flavor, aroma and acceptability of the processed foods. They also study the change in structure of food molecules and particles using sophisticated instruments. They also ensure proper storage of processed food with being any change. The food technologist also work in laboratories and food processing plants. Generally the food technologist work in a team work.





The salary of a Food technologist depends upon the academic qualifications and specialization in the subject. The person holding a bachelor degree in Food science and Technology normally gets an entry level salary of rs. 20,000 to 25,000 per month in private industry. The post graduate gets around Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 40,000 per month and the person holding a doctoral degree gets a salary of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 60,000.





The salary in a multinational company is comparatively higher then national private companies. This is a ever growing field and have huge job opportunities in India and abroad.
