Hi Namrata,
Before I speak on the course, just wanted to know, you have mentioned, btech + mtech in IT with spl. in software engineering. But while checking the IIIT Allahabad Institute i did not get this combination.
Also doing a dual degree helps you in terms of saving a year. But my advise would be to first know the basic and probably you could pursue an M.Tech and an MBA as dual subject, with few years of work experience in the industry after your Graduate.
None the less it is completely your choice and can definitely be helpful with a big name of the Institute supporting your education.
As a Software Engineer, though I do not wish to get into detailing but, your main role would be to bringing or designing new softwares and its applications in terms of it being user friendly. Sometimes it also means modification of existing software in the market. In short strong computational knowledge, algorithms coding etc is essential to be successful in this field.
Some of the job profiles offered in the industry includes:
Hope this helps.
Wish you good luck.........
Dear Namrata,
Thanks for writing to www.careerguide.com! I believe we had a brief conversation about this yesterday.
As discussed, dual degree programs are fantastic when you are clear about the specialization and want to make career in the select specialization.
Check before you choose the dual course:Curriculum (Does the cover themes/topics that should be covered in MTech program? or it has different curriculum? Does curriculum offer practical experience, industry exposure?)Focus of the program (Is dual program is industry focused or research focused?)Faculty members (Are they expert in their specialization, have good research publications?)Exposure you get in dual course (is it equivalent or at par with regular MTech course?)Placement (how is campus placement for dual degree program?)Does the institution offer PhD program? Is dual program recognized?
Benefits of Dual Program: If your goal is to do MTech after graduation, then dual program can save one year and also save you from giving entrance exam for MTech admission.Dual degree program would be very useful if you plan to do PhD or enter into academics.Several multinationals have setup advanced R&D labs in India, and they hire MTechs and PhDs only, giving a very good work environment and a lucrative career. Dual course will help you get into those labs.
Cons for Dual Program:Once you choose the course, you can't change your specialization. If you are doing only BTech then you will have the flexibility to choose some other stream like MBA after your BTech. If you want to do PhD, some foreign Universities do not recognize dual degree and advise students to do masters.
After considering all above points, I would recommend you to go for dual course if you are interested research or doing PhD.
If your focus is to work in service industry, then better go for BTech and later you can do MBA or other relevant course.
Hope this is helpful for you to take informed choice. If you still have some querries, feel free to revert back to me.
Wish you best luck for bright career!Apurva Kumar Pandya, PhD
