Now that career is the only focus of life especially after taking the class 12 board exams, it comes as no surprise that someone who is interested in Computers and would like to pursue a career in the field should ask- Is getting a BCA degree better equivalent to getting a B.Tech degree in Computer Science?

To answer this question, we need to take it up and understand what BCA and B.tech Computer Science really are. A simple yes or no cannot possibly answer it.

Is getting a BCA degree better equivalent to getting a B.Tech degree in Computer Science?

It’s a question running through curious minds. Why?

Because Btech takes 4 years to complete which equates to 8 semesters while BCA only takes 3 years to complete which equates to 6 semesters. So, let’s start with basic definitions.

Know Also : Which one is better? BCA from a reputed college or B.Tech in computer science from a Tier 3 Engineering college?

BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications)

is the acronym for Bachelor of Computer Applications. The course focuses on studying the computer languages and software. The fun part here is that it doesn’t need a student to necessarily have studied Mathematics as a part of their syllabus in classes 11 and 12.

However, for a better grasp of the subject, the best colleges offering this course often stipulate otherwise.

B.tech of Computer Sciences, on the other hand, is a specialized course studying various fields of electrical and software engineering and basically, integrates the two aspects of computers- hardware and software.

The course spans for 4 years. However, the eligibility to this course requires the subjects taken up in 11 and 12 like any other engineering course. Therefore, a former knowledge of Mathematics is part of the eligibility criteria here.

Now that we have established the difference between BCA and B.Tech in terms of their course structure, we still haven’t fully answered- Is getting a BCA degree better equivalent to getting a B.Tech degree in Computer Science?

To dig in deeper, we turn to the job profiles that are offered on the completion of each course and on the awarding of these respective degrees.

We begin with BCA.

The job profile for a graduate with BCA degree is not very fancy. However, the list goes on as this-

  • Chief Inspection Officer- Inspects and protects the security of programs for firms.
  • Computer Programmer- tests, debugs, troubleshoots, designs, writing and maintaining the source code of computers.
  • Computer Scientist- write software and design applications for mobile and develop websites
  • Database Administrator-they is responsible for backing up systems to prevent data loss.
  • Software Developer- typically writes computer software
  • Software Programmer- though this job also means writing computer software, it is not limited to just program development.

Of course, the list is longer than this. However, these are the most relevant jobs for this degree. The IT industry definitely chooses to hire BCA graduates more than BE graduates nowadays because of the former’s diversity with skills and professional base.

However, in the question, “Is getting a BCA degree better equivalent to getting a B.Tech degree in Computer Science?”

Moving on to B.Tech for Computer Science. The jobs offered after this are that o

  • Computer Programmer- tests, debugs, troubleshoots, designs, writing and maintaining the source code of computers. But, he/she is paid more than his/her counterpart with a BCA degree.
  • System Designer- defines architecture, modules, interface, and data for a particular system.
  • E-Commerce Specialist- this job requires understanding demand of customers and responding to it by planning and implementing appropriate electronic commerce solutions.
  • Engineering Support Specialist- Because they pretty much know more than a lot of computers and software, their service is needed to troubleshoot programs and also help design and understand software along with the hardware aspect of technology.
  • Software designer- their job is to use the principles of science and mathematics to develop software for consumer needs.

The average salary for BCA is 30,000- 40,000 and a minimum 8,000  for starters while that of B.tech Computer Science is 2 to 8 lacs per annum. Moreover, it is almost always advised to continue education into Post Graduation after BCA

Therefore, it is generally agreed that B.Tech in Computer Science though more time consuming is better than BCA instead of the other way round is true.

Moreover, B.Tech in Computer Science is more specialized in the course of study which makes the graduates more favorable for the jobs and also the jobs being better paying, unlike BCA where one has to start with a job that doesn’t pay very highly or well at first.
