I am a MBA Marketing and Systems post-graduate. I have 2 years experience in inside sales role in a stock advisory company. I want to continue in the same domain but in non-sales function. I had decided to switch to other domain due to non availability of non-sales jobs in this sector. Please guide me as to what career options are there in finance domain for non finance people. My long term goal is to seek job abroad.

Dear Aspirant,First of of all thanks for consulting careerguide.com
Clearly, it will be difficult for you to shift into finance domain without having adequate strong qualification in finance.
Having done Marketing PG, it is surprising that you are not willing to continue in the sales & marketing field.
I am surprised by your decision that there are no sales jobs. You could definitely shift industry remaining in the same domain.
Best Wishes
Thanks for the reply.
Actually Marketing was a compulsory specialisation so I had to opt for it. But I regret it heavily because I am not at all comfortable in high pressure sales and marketing jobs. I don't know what to do now. I have passed out in 2003 and switching jobs more often.
I have done a course in SEO and Business intelligence.
Can you please guide me what to do? I am under severe career pressure and depression.
Dear Nilesh,
Do not worry and get tensed.
Good to know that you have done SEO and BI course. I think you should take this as a tool to change your domain and sector. I am sure that SEO and BI are in demand in IT field.
You say that you have 2 years experience in Sales, but you say you passed out in 2003? What were you doing in the remaining 10 years?
You should apply for IT jobs. Seek help from private job consultants also since they will rovide personalised help to you.
Best wishes
Thanks for the quick reply.
I have been switching jobs now and then and my largest experience is in a stock advisory company as in Inside sales role which I found quite comfortable.
I am not a person of direct sales or person who can convince clients face to face. Are you sure SEO and BI are in demand in IT industry? How well can a non IT person fare in these fields?
I had given a MAPP Assessment test and the scores revealed my inclination towards finance side as the job roles suggested. But the problem is that since i don't have a finance qualification, it becomes a problem for me.The MAPP report counsellor thus suggested me to go for BI training considering my inclination towards Analysis role.
We have a finance background in our house where I take care of stocks, mutual funds and Insurance transactions. But how to I convert this to a career jobwise is not answerable. If i decide to go as an analyst,it involves lot of ratios and it is a big time consuming job.
The roles which I have in mind are:-
1) Financial backend (But then backend means not much value)
2) Operations side (Much better than sales)
3) Co-ordination
4) Research analyst
5) Business intelligence
6) SEO,PPC --- but seo ppc required creativity and I am not a creative person.
Regards,Nilesh
The feeling I get is that you seem to have found a problem in everything and way. You are not happy with marketing, then you are not sure if you are really suitable in the SEO, BI role, etc (then why you did this course?); then you say finance is fine but dont like ratios and its time consuming job; then you say you are not creative and so SEO is not for you.
Surely you have opted to have yourself assessed through MAPP very late. After getting sizeable work experience in one field, it is very difficult to switch to another.
You have done a course in BI and SEO then how do you term yourself as non IT? As I mentioned earlier, BI will definitely help you find yourself in finance analysis domain. Having a finance background in home, does not mean you can also do it by default.
The only option I see in your case is that you should change industry and remain in sales, since if you shift to another industry based on new qualification, you are a FRESHER and your past experience will be counted Zero there.
As you said that I should remain in sales rather than shifting to other domain but then since i have done a course in BI it would automatically lead to change in domain or job role.
Do you recommend me shifting to BI or say digital marketing in my case?
Your kind advise please.
Showing your BI certification for a future job depends on you entirely.
If you are decided that sales is not for you, then definitely highlighting BI is a must.
You have to decide for yourself whether BI or SEO.
