Below is the list of the key areas that the editors work on most of the times:

1. They keep in touch with the writer and have a conversation or meeting with them in order to better understand the work and clear any points if required. They also need to provide their feedback to the writers and therefore need to maintain the regular communications with them via emails, telephones etc.

2. The editors need to carefully read the writing piece. This is probably the most important part of their work. They have to go through each and every detail of the article very carefully and ensure that everything is right. If any facts and figures are not mentioned clearly or mentioned incorrectly they have to correct that too.

3. The editors need to work on the technical aspects of the writing. For example they need to ensure whether there are any grammatical errors, wrong usage of the words or the work that may hurt the sentiments of a particular community. All these things have to be taken care of, by the editors themselves. Sometimes they have proofreaders separately assigned for this purpose while other times they have to ensure by themselves that things are right on place.

4. The editors need to assign the work and responsibilities to the people working under them and make sure that every thing gets done right on time. There should not be any delays in the whole writing and publishing thing. If there are any, editors are responsible for that. Therefore they need to do these things very carefully and seriously.

5. Editors apart from editing the writer's work may have to add certain things in an article or story. They are supposed to write the additional part in that. For that purpose they need to first understand that story well and make the necessary changes after consulting it with the writers. They cannot make changes on their own else it may offend the writers. Therefore for every single thing that they do, they need to maintain the communications in the right manner.
