Understand what the job entails: Flight attendants hold a very responsible position, they works as a customer service professionals, caregivers, and safety providers. They make sure that passengers enjoy their journey and provide them everything they ask for. In an emergency situation, a flight attendant is expected to remain calm and ensure that passengers feel safe. They have several duties including:

  • Greeting passengers while they are boarding and de-boarding.
  • Helping passengers to reach their seats and pack their luggage in overhead bins.
  • Introducing airline’s safety procedure to the passengers.
  • Providing food services and beverage.
  • Responding to passengers’ inquiry and questions. Help them feel comfortable if they are feeling worried or scared of flying.

Be well aware of perks and drawbacks: Flight attendants get the opportunity to travel all around the world throughout their career but their working hours require them to be present 24 hours a day to come for work. Working at odd hours for long intervals is very common to them. There is no proper shift in this profession, one has to be ready to take on such a requirement.

Decide if this is the right lifestyle for you: Usually, flight attendants travel a lot and they have to make a lot of sacrifices in their personal life. But they serve each other as a family and provide a lot of support for each other. They are expected to be fiercely independent and able to navigate new place on your own and enjoy being on their own, and ready to be away from your family and friends for long trips.Having a cheerful attitude and being able to uplift others during uncomfortable circumstances.

Prepare well for the interview:  Getting selected in a well-known airline is not an easy task in this profession. Try to write an impressive resume for your interview as it matters a lot to recruiters because it acts as the first impression of you. Having a successful and long history of dealing with people would be at an advantage. New joiners go for a specific time of training. In the beginning, there is very low salary and least benefits. But after a year one could expect a lot of benefits and control over working hours.

Meet expected physical requirements: A Flight attendant is expected to maintain a good health status throughout her career and it plays a significant role in getting selected as well. The height in different airlines ranges from a minimum of 5’0” to 5’1 and maximum 5’8 to 6’3. Your age must be between 18 – 21. Your weight should be in proportion to your height. Earlier only females were eligible to apply for this post but a lot of airlines have changed their rules and regulations allowing males to also apply for the job.

Stand out during the training period: All the airlines have a different process for training new flight attendants. It might require training by seniors and also field training on the plane. The usual training period lasts from 4 to 6 weeks which is difficult but rewarding.Learn as much as you can during this period. Learn from your mistake and always try to maintain a positive behavior. Performing well in your training will have a good impression on your seniors and enhance your chances of getting promoted earlier. You work after the training will also make a lot of difference.

Work on your communication skills: As this career requires you to be in constant contact wth passengers all the time, you should always be brushing up your communication skills. Combined with a pleasant personality and good communication skills, you would be able to provide best services and stand out from your competitors. Having good Interpersonal skills are also very beneficial to becoming an excellent flight attendant as you would be able to satisfy and please passengers.

It could be a very unique and exciting career path for energetic, independent, versatile and travel loving individuals as it opens the paths to explore the corners of the world and getting paid for it. You could fulfill your wish of traveling the world through this career path.
