Civil engineers handle all construction work. They are involved in the planning, research, survey and construction of all kinds of buildings awe as roads, airports, dams, traffic and transportation systems, irrigation and power plants, water supply and sewage disposal plants and harbours, oil rigs etc. Basically they are responsible for planning and designing a project and having it constructed to the required scale. Civil engineers also develop and maintain the nation's vital transportation and other infrastructure networks, improve public services, optimize the use of water and energy resources, upgrading housing and transportation system sand protect natural environment. Structural engineering, water management engineering , highway engineering and environmental engineering are some of the areas civil engineers specialize in. The civil engineer has to plan, research , survey and design the project and then get it constructed to the required scale. Civil engineering graduates have a wide variety of employment opportunities available. Some enter the practice of civil engineering, working for engineering firms or starting their own businesses, other work for city,state or central government agencies. As a civil engineer one can also work for organizations like ongc, railways and various departments of state and central government. Employment opportunities exist in the government sector including the railway, department of irrigation, public works, roads, airports, harbors, municipal corporations, telecommunication department etc. Civil engineer can also work as commissioned officer in the defense services, research organizations and laboratories. Those who are down to earth people may join various NGOs working in water shade management and other areas. Civil engineering graduates can also go in for research and take up teaching. They also can join Indian engineering services. Pay for civil engineers tend to be reasonably high , considering that these professionals are highly trained and very skilled. Jobs in public sector may not command as much pay , but they may come with benefits and prominent positions in the society. Their is no fixed salary structure and it varies depending upon the industry a civil engineer is serving
