Dentists look after or preserve teeth by filling,crowning and scaling. They extract teeth and design and fill artificial dentures. They undertake to operate surgically on the jaw, and some specialize in orthodontics mainly for children. Dentistry has many specializations like :-

  • Orthodontics- deals with straightening and aligningteeth and jaws.
  • Periodontics- Specializes in the care of gums and diseases that might affect them.
  • Operative Dentistry-for root canal jobs,filling and cosmetic surgery.
  • Prosthodontics- involves the making of artificial teeth.
  • Oral Surgery-deals specifically with operation on the mouth and jaw
  • Oral Pathology- Provides the diagnosis for diseases that affect the mouth.

To excel in this profession one must have an artistic sense besides scientific knowledge. He must have an artist's esthetic sense as well to realign an entire jaw or to brighten one tooth, to help patients look their best.It is professionthat requires craftsmanship and skill as much as theoretical knowledge. They should have good power of concentration, manual dexterity , accuracy, keen eye for detail, ability to memorize and recall scientific facts, comprehensive medical understanding, cool temperament and strong interpersonal skills. The best dentists are skillful communicator and their analytical and logical reasoning should be above average.
