There are quite a few skills that you need to learn as a fresher in order to get a good job of a Chef. You will mostly be tested on these skills, therefore kindly pay serious attention in developing them.

1. Prep Skills
Prep skills are very important for freshers. Most of the times a trainee chef works on them only. They include actvities like - cutting and cleaning the vegetables and meat, work on the decoration of the items, helping the staff in making salads etc. They appear easy but one has to be absolutely good at them so that further skills can be developed with time. They serve as the ground rules or essentials of any Chef.

2. Cooking Skills
Although as a fresher, no one would expect you to cook the main items in the kitchen but there will be instances when you will have to prepare certain side items or at least help in preparing them. Therefore enough knowledge about various recipes and spices has to be there, otherwise you will not be able to provide that value.

3. Knowledge
When you are being interviewed for the role of a Chef they are not going to ask you to make certain recipes. In some cases they may ask but that's a rare case. Most of the times you will have to face variety of questions from the interviewers and have to tackle them well. The questions can be from the method of cooking or understanding of various recipes or even facts about the usage of different spices. You need to have that huge knowledge base as a Chef so that you can prove yourself worthy of job.

4. Essential Recipes
It may vary from place to place and also with different hotels. In most cases, the prospective employers will let you know about it and you will have to prepare accordingly. For example if you are going to work in a South Indian restaurant, they will expect you to be extremely good at cooking south indian food.

Hope the information was helpful. You will have to focus on these four aspects in order to get a good job as a Chef. Wish you all the best.
