Job hunting after university is tough and with new laws in place, it has made it even tougher for international students to do so. Still, this doesn’t mean that there are absolutely no post-study job opportunities for international students in the UK. Also, there are still plenty of things you can do to increase your chances of successfully landing a job post-graduation which includes working on your language and entrepreneurial skills, building up social networks and working towards an excellent resume.

 

Non-EU Students and Work Visas

 

Non-EU students who want to stay in the UK after their graduation need to apply for a work visa from UK Visa and Immigration. While there are many options available when applying for a visa, it is also important that you are read through all the Visa details and requirements before deciding which one is best suited for you.

 

  1. Start-Up Visa:

 

The start-up visa has replaced the former Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa which is not available any longer. In order to qualify for a start-up visa, the student needs to be identified and sponsored by the UK’s higher education institution or a business organization that has a history of promoting and encouraging entrepreneurs in the United Kingdom. Also, in addition to this, the student will be allowed to apply for the visa only if they have a valid business idea which is new, unique, and viable.

 

  1. Tier 2 (General) Visa:

 

Tier 2 visa is the most common and primary visa for international graduates to remain and work in the UK post their graduation. In order to qualify, the student needs to have a job offer from a licensed employer who is willing to pay you a minimum payroll of £20,800 per year. After 5 years of employment, Tier 2 visa holders can apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK provided that they meet all relevant eligibility criteria and the salary requirements of a minimum of £35,000 per annum.

 

  1. Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme:

 

The Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme is the third most commonly used option to get a visa for the UK. In order to be eligible for the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme, the student needs to be aged around 18-30 and should be from either Canada, Japan, Australia, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong or Taiwan. Also, you will need saving of at least £1,890 to apply. In addition to this, anyone with a Tier 5 visa can stay in the UK for up two years however this cannot be extended.

 

  1. Tier 4 student visa:

 

If you are a student studying Ph.D. at any of the UK’s university you can apply to stay in the United Kingdom for a further 12 months post your program completion date. Students with a Tier 4 visa can also apply for a part-time work placement or internship which comes under the duration of 20 hours a week.

 

Job Opportunities:

 

Finding a job can be a bit of a task and being a recent graduate, it can also take a while before you land yourself a suitable job. However, you need not stress about it.  Here are a few of the many ways that can help you make this hunt a bit easier.

  1. Plan well ahead and start looking for a job while you are still in your university.
  2. You can upload your CV on many of the UK’s leading independent job portals including Adecco, Indeed, Adzuna, Monster, and Trovit.
  3. Keep a track on the company website for possible vacancies.
  4. Socializing and networking is a crucial part of finding your future employer. So try to build good connections at your student accommodation, or get involved at the university communities.
  5. Start building a strong professional brand that depicts you in a professional light. Also, start creating accounts on Linkedin and other networking platforms.
