What is NIOS?

National Institute of Open Schooling is the only program in India where students and learners can take admission who want to complete their study in private mode or through distance learning. Through the NIOS board, students can complete their education and do their extra studies, and make their career like the students of other education boards.

NIOS (National institute of open schooling) is accessible to students as an open board for secondary, senior secondary, and vocational education while other boards like CBSE, ICSE, and other state boards follow a school system.

NIOS gives an alternative to formal education by providing distance learning programs in secondary and senior secondary education. The NIOS board was launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), whose goal was to provide education to children from rural or economically underprivileged sections of society, specially-abled or who wants to complete their education through distance mode.

What are the Main objectives of NIOS?

NIOS’ principal purpose is to provide relevant, continuous, and developmental education at all levels of schooling, from elementary school to pre-university, through an open or distance learning platform.

And it is to bring about its share of contribution to the greater equality and justice in society and of course, the evolution of a learning society.

  1. To provide formal education to the children in rural areas of the country where there is no school facility.
  2. To provide education to such students who could not complete their fundamental education for any reason.
  3. Students who have failed in class 10 or class 12 board examination (as from any other board) can complete their class 10 or class 12 in the same year with the facility of an on-demand examination of NIOS.

How can students study through NIOS?

Students can complete their education from class 1st to class 8th from NIOS. And along with this one can complete their education from class 10th, class 12th, or vocational courses.

For education up to secondary and senior secondary level, NIOS provides facilities for students to choose courses of their choice, the pace of learning, and also to transfer their marks from CBSE. This facility also provides for all other National/State Board of School Education and State Open Schools.

Enrolled students in the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) can take admission in secondary (class 10), senior secondary (class 12), or vocational courses and basic education. Apart from this, students who have failed in other board exams in class 10th or 12th can appear in the on-demand examination (ODE) of the NIOS board, anytime and can finish the class 10th or 12th board exams.

NIOS board provides an admission process twice every year for new students as this open board follows the exam scheme twice a year. New students who want to take admission in NIOS board can take admission in block I or block II in stream 1.)

There are NIOS assignments given by the enrolled course at class 10th or class 12th. Under which, for each subject chosen by the students, there will be three assignments, each assignment will be based on 6 questions. The students must complete all the assignments and submit them to the teachers/tutors/coordinators at the allotted recognized Institute for evaluation.

What are the Programmes offered at NIOS?

The National Institute of Open Schooling or NIOS is an alternative career option and provides open and remote learning opportunities to interested learners or students by offering the subsequent Courses/Programs of Study (ODL). Here are the courses that the NIOS(national institutes of open schooling) offers:

  1. Open Basic Education (OBE) It is for 14+, youngsters, adults at A, B, C categories that are equal to classes III, V, and VIII of the traditional school system.
  2. Secondary Education Course
  3. Senior Secondary Education Course
  4. Vocational Education Courses/Programmes
  5. Life Enrichment Programmes
