Forensic Science is a subject that fascinates most of us. It is the major study of science and criminal justice. Forensic Science is essentially a crime laboratory-based profession. It can be defined as the application of scientific knowledge and methodology to criminal investigations and legal problems. Forensic science allows objective evidence in criminal investigations.

Forensic Science is an interdisciplinary field that involves Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. The primary objective of forensic science is the recognition, identification, and evaluation of physical evidence(s). Therefore, the field of forensic science is an essential component of the modern judicial system and convictions.

How to become a Forensic Scientist:

It is a good advantage for Medical Science students to become forensic scientists. Forensic science is not a branch or discipline of science, but it is a catch-all for various distinct branches. Various universities in India offer certificate, Bachelor and Master courses in Forensic Science. Once you have done the Master degree successfully, then you can even go for a Doctoral Degree course in Forensic Science.

  1.  Undergraduate Courses(3years) –  B.Sc in Forensic Science
  2. Post Graduate Courses(2years) – M.Sc. in Foreign Science – PG Diploma in Forensic Science
  3. Doctoral – Ph.D. in Forensic Science – M.Phil. in Forensic Science.

Scope:

Due to increase in crime rate and criminals, the Scope of forensic science study is increased exponentially. There are lot of job opportunities in government and private sectors in India for forensic Science graduates. Some of the career paths in the Forensic Science are as follows:

  • Crime Scene Investigator/Forensic Science Technician: Crime scene investigators, also known as Forensic science technicians, assist in the collection of evidence, conduct analysis and help investigate crime scenes.
  • Forensic Ballistics Expert: The forensic ballistics experts are the experts in everything related to firearms. They help the investigators in identifying the trajectory of fired rounds to find a point of origin. They also identify the kind of bullets used and various other related points.
  • Bloodstain Pattern Analyst: These analysts analyze patterns in blood which help to get important clues about various crimes.

  • Forensic DNA Analyst: DNA analysis is a crucial part of criminology and forensic science. The DNA analyst works primarily in a laboratory setting, examining evidence gatherers by police officers and crime scene investigators.
  • Forensic Toxicologist: Forensic toxicologists help investigators identify causes of death to include poisons, chemicals and intoxicating substances.
  • Forensic Document Examiner: Forensic document examiners compare handwriting samples; determine the origin of documents and detect fraud.
  • Digital Forensic Expert/Forensic Computer Investigator: The investigators collect data from different computing devices which will be used as evidence for several electronic crimes.

  • Forensic Accountant: Forensic accountants scour documents, electronic records, mail trails and financial records to locate evidence of fraud and other financial crimes.
  • Forensic Anthropologist: Forensic anthropologists specialize in identifying human remains and study decomposed physical remains and skeletal systems.
  • Forensic Psychologist: Forensic psychologists usually work with jails, prisons, forensic labs, rehabilitation centers, police departments, law firms, schools and government agencies. Forensic psychologists work in both civil and criminal cases. They play vital role in understanding the psyche of the criminal, motive of crime and also sometimes in the nature of sentencing.

  • Forensic Pathologist: Forensic Pathologists are also known as medical examiners. The field of forensic pathology focuses on determining the cause of death by examining a corpse. A post-mortem is performed by a medical examiner, usually during the investigation of criminal law cases and civil law cases in some jurisdiction.
  • Forensic Odonatologist: Odontology is the science of teeth. Forensic odontology is the application of odontology in criminal cases. In certain cases where the fingerprints and DNA analysis could be impossible then this forensic odontology is used to identify both victims and suspects.
  • Polygraph Examiner: A polygraph examination is a useful tool in solving crimes and detecting deception from suspects and witnesses. The Polygraph examiners will use the “lie detector” and provide analysis of the results. Polygraph reports throw light in complex crime situations
