Graduate life is one of the most memorable and best times of any person’s life. It is also the best time to explore, understand, work towards personal growth and learning new skills. When we’re in our hometown at home and studying, it often sub-consciously puts us in the ease and safety of being sheltered, with the familiarity of things we know. Every time we go to a new place, our brain responds, learns and develops itself – a phenomenon called neuroplasticity. Read on to know the top 5 things you learn when studying in a new place away from home and how it improves your brain functions.

A Fresh New Start – New Place, New Experiences, New Neural Connections

Away from home, in an unfamiliar place with completely new people – a situation that might not seem like a very intriguing thought. But think of it another way, this is another chance to start over, with a new set of people, new environment, and breaks monotony of familiarity. Scientifically, whenever we go to new places, our brain’s neural connections rearrange, reconnect and restrengthen themselves to record, register and process the bombardment information in a new place. In fact, a study by the University of Miami and New York University showed that going to new places actually improves connections between the hippocampus and striatum of the brain, bringing a sense of positivity.

More Open-mindedness

Just like you, there would be lots of other students who would have left their homes to study in a different place. Each of them would be from a different cultural background, and might each speak different languages.  It gives you a chance to learn ad expose yourself to diverse cultures and customs, first-hand. You might even be able to master a new language too. Research shows exposing yourself to new experiences improve the brain’s health by positively influencing cognitive and memory skills. In addition, you become more open-minded, along with an increased sense of creativity, imagination, and develop an intellectual curiosity to the things around you.

Adjust or Innovate

Staying away from home means that you might not have the comfortable study chair that you’re used to studying in, or might end up with a roommate that snores really loudly. Even the food you get might not taste so good, but eventually the brain learns to accept and adjust to the situation (my brain can’t hear you, you snoring roomie!) – a through a process referred to as habituation; or find a jugaad (adding green chilly pickle to that hostel khana so it tastes much better?) to make things seem manageable.

Becoming Responsible & Self-Motivating Yourself

When you’re living alone, without your parents there to constantly reminding you about keeping your chores done, the biological alarm clock in you keeps reminding you of tasks to be done, and also, motivates you to get it done. Every time you do finish a task, your brain rewards you with a dopamine hit, and further motivates you to finish mores tasks, activating the brain’s reward system. Over time, you master the art of managing time and tasks, and become more independent too.

Learning to Manage your Budget

Evolutionarily, our brain is wired to experience pleasure when we spend money on any purchase, a materialistic gain; a center of the brain called nucleus accumbens controls this reaction. On the other hand, insula, referred to as the center of “disgust and pain” is activated a well when thinking about the amount of money we need to spend on the purchase. In most cases, the pleasure from the dopamine hit outweighs all other considerations, and the immediate gratification we get and spend money. But now that you don’t have a family bank to lean back on every single time, your brain actually becomes more conscious of how and what you spend money on, and eventually starts listening to your insula, keeping expenses in check.

The Conclusion

You Become a Better Version of Yourself

So, if you ever do get the chance to study outside home, though you might have to sacrifice delicious ghar ka khana, maybe all the benefits could compensate a little for all the new neural connections you made and how your brain has improved to become a better version of yourself.
