Difference between essay and scientific essay

There is little difference between an essay and a scientific essay. An essay is shorter and presents the writer’s opinion, whereas a scientific essay is complicated and complex, which requires deep knowledge and study while writing. If you expand an essay and include evaluation or interpretation/argument, it will be a scientific essay.

How to write a scientific essay

An essay has its structure and, it should be followed by students when writing. So an essay consists of three main components an introduction, the main body, and a conclusion.

The introduction would include two things. The first one is the definition, defining the concepts that you are going to be talking about or the keywords that are included in the essay title. And the second one is an outline, telling the reader what you are going to cover in your essay.

The main body of the essay should include at least three main points. Each point should have an active subheading which should tell the reader what to expect in that paragraph. After you present your point, it is important to back it up with evidence because there is no point in randomly saying something if you have nothing to back it up. This is the difference between a creative essay and a scientific essay. Therefore you need to include a scientific research paper or evidence from it that backs it up. And if you have original points, explain the thought process behind that point. Then you can include diagrams and figures in your essay. They are a quick and easy way to convey information to the reader.

Then, you need to write a conclusion. A conclusion should include two things. First- it should essentially wrap up your essay, so bring together all the points that you have made. The second component is to convey to the reader what your final verdict is. It is like giving an ultimate answer to the question. If you want to put a reference, you can do that. It includes the author’s name followed by the methodology used.

Mistakes to avoid while writing

  • Using terms inconsistently throughout the manuscript, especially capitalization, spelling, and acronyms.
  • Proofread or check before submitting your work.
  • Using the same sentence construction over and over.
  • Using only passive sentence construction. The active sentence will make your writing more interesting and alive.
  • Switching between past and present tense inappropriately. Also, use the future tense to state a perspective.
  • Using multiple word nouns and also avoid using more words and bigger words than necessary.
  • Describing each thing with data.

How to choose a topic

When writing a scientific essay for the first time, it is hard and confusing to choose a topic and get started. For this, start by choosing the type on which you can write – easy topics related to sports, adults, children, or related to the country, argumentative ones like why, what, and how something should be allowed and done. Topics can be controversial, funny, or interesting. Students should choose the topic of their interest. It can be related to technology, religion, social media, music, education, health, social issues, and the environment. Students can write related to physics, chemistry, biology, criminal law, history, dentistry, psychology, finance, marketing, sociology, computer science, ecology, etc. Then, after the topic is decided read some related information, brainstorm on topics, and check for available content or essay already written on it.

How to speed up writing

For students writing is not in practice. For effective and faster writing, read out the following tips:

  • If you cannot write simple and clear, you need to keep working on it and should have clarity about what you are writing.
  • Choose quality over quantity, do not go for complicated vocabularies, it will consume a lot of your time to write effectively.
  • You can start with writing the body part and then go for the introduction and conclusion. When you are writing, the process of finding sources to back up your arguments is time-consuming.
  • Use online apps when you write – Google docs for editing and final submitting your work.
  • Students should keep the topic in mind when writing, avoid including unnecessary information.
