EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

How to become a teacher in India: For becoming a teacher the basic requirement is to have a bachelor’s degree in education (B.Ed). You can also pursue masters in the same field that adds up to your job profile and increases your employability. But for B.Ed degree, first you have to complete your graduation in any subject/field of your choice. After completion of your B.Ed degree you become eligible for teacher till class 10th and for further classes it depends on your other qualifications like M.Ed or Phd or any higher qualification.

A second degree which you can pursue is BELED (Bachelor’s in Elementary Education). It is an undergraduate level course and you need not do any graduation before applying for this course. You can apply for this course after completing high school from any stream of your choice. It is a 4 year graduation program. B.El.Ed. course focuses on topics such as – communication skills, teaching skills, human and child development, subject-wise knowledge and relevant theory classes/courses. After completion of BELED, you can teach till elementary classes only; maximum till 8th grade.

Other than these two courses you can go for BCT (Basic Training Certificate). Basic Training Certificate is a two-year certificate level education course which is recognized by NCTE, Government of India. BTC is a mandatory training certificate required for those planning to teach in govt. primary schools. For applying for BTC you must have completed your graduation in any desired field with around 50-60 percentage as final score.

You can also go for D.Ed (Diploma in Education), is a certificate level teacher training programme that equips candidates to become nursery school teachers. The course basically caters to elementary-level education in India and is an important job-oriented program in the field of education. How to become a teacher in India Admission to D.Ed program is usually offered on the basis of candidates’ performance in the written entrance test conducted at university/ institute level. However, some institutions also offer direct admission to candidates on the basis of merit. The merit list is prepared by the officials on the basis of candidates’ marks in Class 12th exams.  

Candidates who are interested in government jobs through the Central Board of Secondary Education can also appear for the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET). This exam is conducted by CBSE for the appointment as a teacher for classes 1st to 8th.

Elementary school teacher : A few of the main duties of an elementary school teacher are creating and editing lesson plans, enforcing classroom and school rules, observe and evaluate student performance, and grade homework and tests.
