India has a rich cultural heritage and, it should be conserved. There are huge scopes and opportunities for students in the career of museology, and hence it’s a multidisciplinary subject. Indians are not much aware of this field, and so, a glamorous career gets ignored. And so, one should know and learn about this enriched field. 

What is Museology?

Before discussing the scope, opportunities and a detailed study of museology, we must know its meaning. Museology includes the science of organizing, arranging and managing museums. Whenever we visit a museum, the arrangement of the old scriptures, sculptures, and their factual information attracts us so much that the whole scenario brings us to a particular age, which the museums supposed to have. And all these works are tough and need professionals. So generally, we can say that museology is the study of “museums”.

Work Description:

The daily works of the museologists include managing the activities in a museum, planning, arranging, organizing important events and exhibitions in the museum, organizing film trips, guide tours, school visits and making decisions regarding purchases of new collection for the museum enrichment.

Why should you choose a career in Museology?

If you love the history of arts, archaeology then you can pursue your career in museology. One will fall in love with the academic environment in the museum. One can also participate in new exhibits, programs, special events in the museum. Moreover, if you are interested in travel, this can be the best career ever. However, it will not be easy to make a lot of money in this career. There will be a lot of competitions in this field. But one will love the work.

Career options in Museology:

  • Author: one can become the author of history and art books and provide all the valuable information which was not available earlier.
  • Design consultant: The job of a design consultant involves creating product displays, assisting in marketing processes, use of relevant software’s to produce interior space or clothing designs. They generally work in retail stores, museums etc.
  • Archivist: the role of an archivist is fascinating because they are experts in assessing, collecting, organizing, preserving and providing access to records and archives, are determined to have a long-term value.
  • Conservation specialist: one will have to preserve the art objects and monuments. They are also supposed to detect any decay happening in any artefacts. 
  • Curator: one has to organize the display of artefacts in the museum, exhibitions by selecting the display items, labelling them and arranging them, making purchases of new and rare collections for the museums.
  • Gallery Assistant: a gallery assistant has to provide administrative and creative services for an art gallery. Their responsibility is to – speak to the visitors, answer phone calls, coordinate the events, work with gallery designers, and managing the gallery collection.  

There are some other professions too, which one can also become -guide, educator, art teacher, creative director, and collection’s assistant.

Our world has a lot of history which is still unknown. Museology is such a subject that helps us to explore the world and come up with new facts.
