Being a successful Pilot requires a combination of certain skills and abilities. Apart from mathematical and technical a pilot must be creative as well. Being a pilot you have to stay calm and think creatively under pressure in case of emergencies. You must have leadership skills, good communication skills and the ability to work as a team to ensure a safe and smooth journey for your passengers.

Here are the top 7 traits and skills for becoming a professional pilot:

1. Communication Skills

Whilst Communication Skills are needed in every profession. Good Communication Skills is the key to success. Clear communication skill is very much needed in this profession. In fact unclear or lack of communication between the Pilot and controller communication can lead to flight incidents or accidents.

It’s necessary to establish proper communication between Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the Pilots so that pilots can receive all necessary updates related to radar vectors, weather, traffic information, or advice in emergencies.

Hence, pilots must have good communication skills to communicate effectively with the ATC controllers to manage airport and airspace flow capacity, as well as safety.

2. Situational Awareness

A pilot must be attentive to everything that is going on throughout flying. Being a pilot you must keep a constant evaluation of your surroundings and must make the right decision quickly if things go sideways.

You must keep yourself aware of the things like the location, weather, flight conditions, aircraft configuration, Spatial orientation and energy state of the aircraft which can affect the safety of the passengers.

Lack of situational awareness could result in Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT), loss of control, airspace infringement, loss of separation, or an encounter with adverse weather conditions.

3. Team Working Skills

Team working skills are crucial for a pilot. A pilot must work in a team with the ATC controllers to ensure a safe and smooth journey for the passengers. Also, they must coordinate with its cabin crew as a team. Breakdown in teamwork and communication can lead to accidents or aeroplane crashes.

You must work in a team with the co-pilot, cabin crew, flight attendants, air traffic controllers and flight dispatchers. Communication and cross-checking of each other’s work throughout the team leads to a positive effect on the safety of the flight and this is the party responsible for making the airline industry one of the safest of the high-risk industries.

4. Decisiveness & Quick Thinking Skills

Sometimes decision-making can be really challenging for pilots. Time and resources constraints test your decision-making skills. A pilot with good decision-making skills can handle situations efficiently. When they encounter obstacles or emergencies, they follow the manual containing the specific procedures to follow in order to overcome the situation, but it’s their decisiveness that helps them to take the correct decision.

A pilot not only have to make the right decision but also have to make their mind up quickly. They always have to keep a cool head despite knowing that a wrong decision can result in a fatal outcome putting the life of the passengers at risk.

5. The ability to remain Calm

It’s crucial for pilots to adapt the ability to remain calm and think wisely before acting on any situation in case of emergencies. When you panic, it clouds your judgement and affects your ability to make rational decisions. Hence, poor decisions, or indecisiveness have a detrimental impact on our performance as a pilot.

You must train yourself to remain calm and to deal with abnormalities or emergencies. Flight training makes sure a pilot is confident enough to make sound decisions under pressure.

6. Leadership

Being a pilot you must have leadership qualities. You are responsible for the aircraft, passengers travelling and the flight attendants. Being in charge of everything requires excellent leadership skills. There can be consequences of poor leadership qualities. Hence, one must understand the elements of effective leadership.

A pilot needs to manage their cockpit effectively to ensure everything is followed incorrect procedure. Apart from this they also have to manage his crew. A pilot must be able to lead the crew towards success in any moments of crisis. As a leader of an aircraft, it’s important to minimize the risk of errors, as well as deal with unforeseen threats that might arise.

7. The ability to understand Technical Information

A pilot must be aware of the technical terms associated with the aircraft. They should know the typical procedure and technical task to be carried out throughout the journey.

A pilot must check the overall condition of the aircraft before take-off and after landing, ensure the fuel supply is adequate, the aircraft is balanced and below the weight limit, whether conditions are suitable for flying or not, Monitor engines, fuel consumption, and other aircraft systems during flight, maintain constant communication with the air traffic control etc.
