Government job has always been a hyped career destination and would remain to hold the hype for years to come. Given our socialistic leaning and constant pampering by the society, people serving in the government services has always been a ludicrous career option, which many of us desire to succeed. But again there’s no concept of free lunch or say ‘Langar’ in this sector, hence ‘this piece of cake’ isn’t even available to even 2% of the population of India. One of them is UPSC Government Exam.

Basic Statistics about Government Jobs & UPSC CSE Case Study

Just to begin with the highest and most glorified exam of UPSC, let me begin with a few statistics. Normally, the vacancy notification talks somewhere around 800 seats diversified across services in all the sectors monitored by governments ( states and central government combined). For these 800 seats, around 10 lakhs or say a million people across India apply. Barely 15,000 of the candidates, which is 1.5 to 2.0 of the total number applied. Again amongst them, hardly 8 to 10 percent of the qualified candidates cut the Interviews, and finally, 800 among them are shortlisted. Similar is the situation in all of the Group A/B/C/D government job vacancies. When millions of people compete for a few hundred odd jobs, one can imagine the level of competition. I remember in 2018, Indian Railways who is one of the largest recruiters in the government sector announced a few thousand vacancies and it ended up receiving around 1.3 crores of applications. The number of zeros in the above-mentioned figure is just mind-boggling.

Now, the question arises who are the people who qualify them and receive the most sought ‘Offer Letters ‘. Yes, they are normal people like us who come out with flying colors because of proper hard work, motivation, and guidance which sums up to be called Smart Work, precisely. This smart work is nothing but the Middle-path doctrine of Gautam Buddha. The scripture says, when Buddha left his kingdom, family, and all royal patronage to attain enlightenment, he was unaware of the path to achieving it. Hence, he went for an extreme path and undertook severe meditation. He didn’t even care for proper food and diet which wasn’t sustainable in the longer run. As a result, he became frail and weak and even pushed himself on the verge of death. Later he learned that his means to achieve his goal was just impractical and made no sense as he was hampering his physical being and existence. So to attain his goal, he undertook a middle path which consisted of proper nourishment and meditation, which ultimately helped him to enlightenment or Dharmachakra parivartan, in historical terminology. Thus it was a finely tuned balance between his final goal and his effort that lead him to great heights and later he gave sermons to other people to pinnacle one’s performance and do justice with one’s life

Conclusion

The moral of the story is we must have sync between our efforts and the results we expect. Otherwise, all our labor, hard work, and efforts may go ashtray and we won’t be able to achieve the goals that we aspire for. Only the hard work won’t help us to attain the objectives, one needs to enrich himself with the proper wholesome knowledge of the exam or competition we are appearing. One needs to analyze, introspect one’s moves if he’s moving in the right direction. Also, one needs to remain positive and focused in his/her approach always irrespective of the failures or other circumstances. Because success is a gamble, is a game of thorns (not the one which is broadcasted on OTT platforms), but is more diverse and multi-player and multichannel which seeks a lot of patience, perseverance, hard work, focus, and determination to remain in the game and emerge as a winner. One needs the correct approach, proper skillset, exact materials (i.e. study materials) so that we capitalize on all these available resources. Then we need to up the ante, and go all guns blazing. One must know, Success has got many tales while failure has none. The world is just ‘black and white’ on this parameter and you haven’t got many to empathize with you!
