When people appear for examinations, of course a conceptual understanding but some information like long equations, definitions, scientific names etc. need to be written in the answer paper as it is. At such places, memorization techniques are important. Memorization techniques depend from person to person.
Writing in Bullets or List
After one reads a chapter full of paragraphs, one would of course not remember all the paragraphs by heart. Most of the time all the information given is not important enough that it should be memorized. one must identify the lines which are important and write down the important lines with the keyword in the form of bullets or while making a list under each topic of the chapter. This helps the student identify which information is important and which is not and also ensures quick revision. Some students memorize the best by writing the content a number of times.
Which Skill Should You Master?
Reading aloud
Let us not forget that most of the knowledge that was imported to students in the older Indian time was in the form of “Shruti” or sound. The power of learning through sound can never be underestimated. This is the reason why many of our teachers suggest reading out the paragraphs of the book loudly while studying. this also helps us in improving and articulation in speech.
Preparing Charts for Display
Some students learn the best with visual knowledge. Charts can be prepared and be kept on display on the wall in front of the study table or on the study table itself. Watching videos from YouTube on the subject matter is also a good way to memorize the matter through visual knowledge.
Learning through Flowcharts
Flowchart and diagrams are a way of writing down the information that we have studied very precisely and in a manner that can be revised very quickly. A day before the examination can be utilized in going through all the information in a very quick manner with the help of flow charts and diagrams. For this one needs to prepare the flow charts and diagrams at the time of starting the chapter for the first time and keep it ready for revision before the examination.
Learning through Mnemonics
Long statements for data that are presented to us in the form of a list can be memorized using mnemonics. Mnemonics are a way of preparing a sentence using the first letter of each word on the list that we want to memorize. Mnemonics are available on the internet on any subject matter that one wants to learn.
Right Skill = Bright Future
Quizzing with Friends
Friends can make our studies interesting. A very smart strategy that I have used during my exam preparation is that me and my friend used to decide the topic that both of us would be covering during the day and we would quiz each other from the same topic at night for 1 hour before going to sleep. This not just helped me in recalling whatever I had learnt but a few points that I had missed out and my friend remembered was also added to my memory to the quiz. The same happened with my friend.
Recalling before Sleep
Research says that people tend to remember the information that they have just thought about before their sleep. One month before the examination approaches, one must start this habit as it works wonders not just in memorization but also in judging how much progress one has made during that day. One can start recalling important points about all the topics that one has studied during the day in an orderly manner.
Continuous Revision
Most of the time we forget what we memories because of lack of revision. Some people just cover the syllabus once whereas sincere students try to finish the syllabus early and revise about 2-3 times. It can be advisable to keep revising whatever one has learnt during the whole week on Sundays.
