The majority of us all, at least once, definitely have been through a situation wherein we forgot about some important information that was essential for completing a task; and has kept us halted for a time until we brainstormed enough to conclude or just left the task unfulfilled. We really don’t like to forget important information, do we? So, as to not forget some important information or to even retain some very basic information for a longer time, let’s look at some important, proven to be helpful tips to complete our task without much interruption and enhance our learning capabilities.

Don’t Be Limited To The Skills You Already Have

It’s been said many times, and it works just as fine and is just as important every time that one must not limit themselves to the skills they already possess. Try to engage with new learning prospects like engaging in learning about a new sport, music instrument, subject, art, and the list goes on. Try to associate yourself with activities you’re not already familiar with and make sure that it engages all of your senses; to be able to recall information later with comparative ease because it has engaged and had been paired up with all your senses.

Don’t Be Fixated On A Single Routine And Place, Welcome Changes

To enhance learning capabilities, it’s advised to not follow a set pattern of going about things every time. We need to experiment with things because if keep on following the set pattern of going about things, then there’s no specific engagement of senses, that is happening other than what we’ve already had hands-on experience of. For example, if you’ve been sitting at a specific place every day to study, try to change it after some interval. Or, if you’ve been using the same pens, stationery every day; try to use different registers or you might use different color pens; it progresses our learning capabilities.

Test Yourself Before The Main Test

To make sure that you don’t forget important information at the time for which you’re preparing the most; one must test them before the main test. What you can do is incorporate changes in your learning routine like highlighting important information and looking at the relevant information at the time of revision rather than again reading through complete sentences which hampers our attention and wastes our energy. One of the best-suggested tips about pre-test revision includes preparing a list of all the important questions and answering all the questions without looking at the answer copy and noting where you lacked at retaining information. This will point out our easily forgettable areas and knowing this beforehand can help us do much better in the main test as it would be taken care of by then. Also, make a dedicated study group and engage in testing yourself through problems shared by others, quizzes and doubts; this will not only be of mutual benefit but would also boost your learning capabilities.

Don’t Cut On Sleep

Many times, we’ve seen our friends following the phrase ‘burning the midnight oil’ too seriously, and we regret that we’re sleeping too much. But, it’s a very common case of just blindly following practices that a majority of the population is following. Sleeping a good number of hours; at least 8 hours a day helps our brain process and consolidate information for long-term use. It’s a practice that one needs to follow very seriously because not only does sleep helps us to curb our stress level for better performance, but also helps us to gather enough energy to undertake tasks while our brain also gets time to function upon the information we’ve come across in a day. Lack of sleep leads to fatigue, irritation, and sleep-deprived oriented behavior, which is detrimental to effective learning and retention practices.

Don’t Sit For Longer Hours To Study Without Refreshment Breaks

It’s been made significant for a long time that our attention span cannot stay uninterrupted on a single activity for a long time. It’s advisable to take gaps or breaks between our study sessions, and don’t let your mind trick you into thinking that these are unnecessary. Try to take break sessions after you’ve completed a small goal and incorporate those break sessions with rejuvenating activities like music, walking out in fresh air, etc. as per your preferences.

Using Mnemonics For Better Learning

Mnemonics introduces us to the creative side of learning. It helps us to increase our learning capabilities and process information in an efficient way by associating the information with things that we are familiar with. One can use acronyms, rhymes, chunking, visualization, and various other mnemonic types of facilitated learning to retain better. For example, in acronyms, we all have heard of the acronym “Please Excuse MDear Aunt Sally,” which is to remember the order of operations in algebra Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. In rhymes, we use acoustic facilitated processing of information which makes it relatively very simple to grasp. This is why we still remember some of our nursery rhymes and songs without failure.

Try to associate information that we need to learn with catchy lyrics or rhymes, this way it is retained for a longer period and makes the learning activity interesting too. In chunking, we try to break information into parts that are too difficult to remember when to read altogether. For example, remembering a ten-digit phone number is much easier when it’s processed in chunks of information like the first three digits at once, then three, and then rest four; rather than remembering all at once.
