Introduction

Often, it is said, that the mind and body are two different parts performing different bodily functions. But according to science, it has been proved that they are in close association with each other. Your mental health is like an important fiber in the fabric called life that helps you to accomplish your goals and lead your life happily. It is found, if you are psychologically fit, then you will be able to focus on various things and that mental health affects physical health. It reduces the risk of heart attacks or strokes, while poor mental health makes you lethargic and lazy.

What are the various effects that mental illness has on the physical health of an individual?

Firstly we can say that mental health directly promotes cardiovascular diseases. According to science, it has been seen in the large population that depression and anxiety promote cancer mortality rates. Thereby, leading to the death of many, irrespective of their age, body mass index, and sex. Individuals suffering from mental illnesses like schizophrenia usually lead to an increase in blood sugar levels and osteoporosis. In this the bones become very weak and fragile, thereby making them more prone to fractures.  

Students with mental health problems are more likely to be the victims of various sleep disorders – insomnia or sleep apnea. It then leads to several breathing problems. It also causes a lack of concentration among students, due to which they are not able to study during their classes and focus on them. Due to sleep problems, an individual feels physically weak and, this worsens the physical health conditions.

Also, the students tend to get attracted towards smoking that deteriorates the physical health of the person. The nicotine present in cigarettes triggers the production of a chemical called dopamine. It relieves depression and provides relaxation to the mind of an individual. However, the relaxation is only temporary and, the person gets addicted to smoking a large number of cigarettes at a time.

How the mental illness affects the academics of a child?

Since mental and physical health is closely related to each other, they have a great impact on the academics of a student. The mental illness would not allow you to fully concentrate on the studies, which will act as a hurdle in approaching professional life. Also, you will become irregular in attending the lectures that slowly and gradually lead you to miss many classes. The addiction to cigarettes and alcohol would not allow you to focus completely as you always think about them. Somewhere you will lose stability in your study schedule. Systematic learning will be lost, which will become a hindrance in your path.

How to maintain mental health that in turn maintains your physical health?

So answering this question, both mental and physical health can be maintained in some following ways?

  • EXERCISE DAILY: Through daily exercises, you will feel peace within yourself. It relieves you from the stress and makes you physically fit. Also, it contributes to making you energetic and mentally stable. 
  • EAT BALANCED DIET: If you include all the food groups in your diet, you will remain physically fit, which allows you to work continuously for more hours. Proper meals within small intervals of time should be consumed daily to maintain both mental and physical health.
  • PROPER SLEEP: Proper sleep will make you understand the concepts during your studies and increase your concentration levels to manifolds. 
  • MEDITATION: Meditation for at least 10-15 minutes daily helps you to focus on your goals and accomplish them. 
  • SEEK HELP FROM ELDERS: If you face any problems, always take help from your elders or friends. They can provide you all the possible solutions to the problems, so you do not suffer from depression, anxiety, or other chronic diseases.

Thus we can say that mental health and physical health are like two wheels of a vehicle called life. So take care of your mental health that, in turn, promotes your physical health. It will create a clear balance between your mind, body, and soul.
