Mukul Rohatgi is an Indian lawyer and appointed as a senior legal counsel, and is the 14th Attorney General in India. He was succeeded by K. K. Venugopal. From June 19, 2014, to June 18, 2017, he served as the Attorney General for three years. He is a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India and also served as Deputy Attorney General of India.

Former Delhi High Court judge, Awadh Behari Rohatgi’s son Rohatgi, represented the Gujarat government in the Supreme Court during the Gujarat riots in 2002. 

Mr. Rohatgi was born on August 17, 1995. In 1975, after completing his commerce, he went on to study law and obtained a law degree from Bombay University. He got his degree in 1978. In 2011, he was given a doctorate in Laws by Fakir Mohan University in Odisha and by Amity University in 2016.

He enrolled himself in the Bar Council of Delhi in May 1978. At a considerably young age of 39 years, he was appointed as the senior advocate by the Delhi High Court in 1994. Later in 1999, he was appointed as an Additional Solicitor General of India but the tenure ended with the change of the government in May 2004. He is known for handling a lot of matters in the Supreme Court and High Courts. Not only did he work for the Central Government but also for the State Governments and Public Sector Companies. He was appointed as the Attorney General of India in June 2014 with the uprise of the Modi led government.

He said in an interview that it has never been easy for him to go into the field of Law despite having legal backing. He said that after working with Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal, he got to understand the scenario and he slowly started getting cases. He used to work very hard and sometimes he used to get cases of Sabharwal as he was a well-established lawyer and had plenty of cases. Sabharwal went on to become the 36th CJI. He started working with him when he was in High Court. Later, Rohatgi started his own legal practice. After 2-3 years of working with Sabharwal, he was easily getting 4-6 cases per day. But he has always considered the legal profession a very hard field. One thing as he said which is the entropy of all successes in the legal profession is the hard work. You have to put in a lot of hard work.

He has also been known to be a very impactful speaker and he has been invited to present his papers. He also went to Scotland where the Indo-British Legal Forum was held and he presented a very well written paper called “Impact of Environmental Law on Human Rights.” He was appointed by the then Chief Justice of India to be part of the Indian Delegation.

In 2015, he attended the Indo-Australian Forum in Canberra, Australia. He was invited by the Government of Australia and the High Court of Australia. He also participated in the meeting of SCO that was hosted by Kazakhstan in 2015 in Astana.

He has been mentioned as a Notable Petitioner by Chambers & Partners and in January 2010, he was mentioned in a list of ‘Top 10 Lawyers in India’ by The Times of India. He was also considered as a leading Senior Advocate by Legal 500. In 2008, he was bestowed with the National Law Day Award by the PM for his broad experience and his unconflicted support to the basic rights provided under the Constitution. He is a very well known and well-regarded lawyer who started like lawyers do and went on to make a big name for himself.
