What do you get when you mix life sciences and computer science together? That’s right, bioinformatics! A relatively new, yet in demand subject, this field has picked up its pace tremendously over the past decade especially. If you are a person who loves life sciences, but also like working on computers, here’s a career option for you – a Bioinformatician. Read on to know about what they do, how you could become a Bioinformatician yourself, and what qualifications as well as skills you need for this career path.

What is bioinformatics? What do bioinformaticians do?

Bioinformatics, also known as computational biology is an interdisciplinary domain that involves the use of different subjects like computer science, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, and   engineering  to process biological information and gain a greater understanding of it. In simple terms, it is using computer technology to manage biological data. The use of bioinformatics in medical and pharmaceutical fields has been rapidly rising due to the increase in research and information generated in genetics and molecular biology.

Some other fields where bioinformatics is applied includes –

Bioinformaticians assist researchers organize, analyze and interpret genetic and molecular data. Data bases are designed by them to retain information created or selected to process, analyze, display and understand the algorithms by also using data mining or statistical tools as well. They also might utilize computer programming abilities to expand software package features, web tools, databases and database queries. Bioinformaticians also monitor the quality of analytical results to verify that the techniques and methods employed are sufficient and suitable to the task at hand.

Apart from these tasks, some bioinformaticians even help with experimental design and collecting of data. Because their job is a key component of the research process, they also may be required to assist in creating journal reports and publications in scientific journals. Bioinformaticians are also required to document all changes, revisions and technical difficulties in the databases, since they might influence research method and quality.

What are the qualifications needed to become a Bioinformatician?

At 10+2 level, it required to take the science stream, with Biology, and preferably along with mathematics. Through various national state level exams, one could apply for courses specialized in Bioinformatics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, or either just at postgraduate level. At under graduation level, one can choose to do a 3-year Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree, or 4-year Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) or a Bachelor of Electronics (B.E.) in Bioinformatics.

One can also choose to do a subject like Biotechnology or any other related life science subject with Bioinformatics as a subject, and further specialize in post-graduation. At a post-graduation level, a higher-level degree in continuation with your UG, which might be M.Sc., M. Tech., or M.E. in Bioinformatics can be taken. Another option is doing diploma or certificate Bioinformatics courses either after UG or PG. Applying for more advanced research positions may require a Ph.D. in the same.
