“Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.”

Although fiction books are important to students, teachers and parents of young children generally do not pay enough attention to nonfiction books.

Many students still prefer to read non-fiction books. Students who are particularly interested in a topic are likely to become more excited about reading when they can read the topic that interests them. There are age appropriate text fonts on a variety of topics. Helping students ask questions about nature, sports, or their idol, and then letting them read the answers themselves is an effective way to show them how engaging nonfiction reading is.

"There's Always A Scope Of Improvement"

In this day and age, with an influx of information, it is extremely hard to know what’s the truth and what is not. Some say that we have been living in a Post-Truth Era. On a personal level, non-fiction books can provide information about a variety of stuff that is based on facts and not lies. It will not be much to say that nonfiction is an absolute necessity in the kind of world that we are living in.

In almost all grades, students should develop research skills in all content areas, especially non-fiction, including literary non-fiction; essays; biographies and autobiography; technical magazines and manuals; and charts, graphs, and maps.

Reading information and nonfiction resources help students to open their eyes to the larger world around them. The prior knowledge they acquire will once again be of great help to their advancement up the educational ladder. Having a general knowledge of the world allows students to apply their personal backgrounds to texts with which they may not be familiar. This helps them better understand what they read.

Why should you start reading Nonfiction today?

One reason non-fiction reading is so important is that it can help students develop prior knowledge, and knowledge itself accounts for 33% of changes in student performance. In the latter part of the education, prior knowledge becomes more important as students begin to read more textbooks with specific content. These textbooks usually include titles, charts, tables, and other text elements that are not commonly found in narrative novels in lower grades.

  • Allowing students to explore and pursue their interests in a wide range of information texts can help them see that the real world is often as surprising and interesting as fantasy. The most obvious difference in reading between students who are ready to go to college and students who are not ready to go to college is the ability to understand complex texts.
