You may read as many articles as you want on career development but there are some things you need to figure out all by yourself. Being a parrot while learning or following a forced pathway or lack of passion will not give you the quality career you deserve. Choosing an occupation can be easy if the below mentioned attributes are considered during the decision period.  Attributes that one can understand and decide for themselves. These are interconnected and can help you with answers you might need. Think of them as elements of a food web. All of them connected through multiple arrows. The following attributes can be answered in any order as long as they help you achieve your vision.

Education

It is a process of learning and understanding theoretical knowledge and its application to the practical world. A child is well instructed not to touch flames yet, he will be curious about it would want to touch it.  Acquiring knowledge begins from the mere age of 4 and is an important step in building a career. Students keeping in mind their interests, needs, and capacity choose their line of education. While Primary and Secondary school provides basics, high school (11th and 12th) and Graduation are an opportunity to direct yourself in the field of choice. A Post-graduation and/or Ph.D. are to hone one’s skills before entering the practical world.  Often students are confused. In such a situation, students can opt for a career assessment test.

Interest

Your mind will apply what you learn if only you understand it. Without interest, understanding seems to be a difficult ability. Interest helps in building a curious mindset and passion. At the same time, it can make the job seem relaxing and enjoyable. Your interests can always become your hobby. Hence, it’s easy to make a career out of it. If hairstyling is an interest, curiosity will develop. One will start doing it because he/she likes it, gathering more and more knowledge and experience will lead to having a full-time career.

Vision

Often we see a famous personality on TV and generate a vision. The idea revolves around the core idea of “living like them”  Developing a vision encourages focus. A clear vision will help a person make wise choices at the crucial stage of career development. It also instigates a sense of commitment towards the career. Some people will start working towards their career by forming a vision first. For example, an individual watches a show (House MD) where the character of Dr. House does an excellent job, will inspire, and the person will start working towards the vision.

Many develop it in the process Example: a group of friends sharing the same interest make get each other attention and over time all become independent entrepreneurs.

Goal

Have One vision but multiple Goals, the journey gets less complicated. When you receive focus, it needs to be used. Goals are the stepping-stones to achieve a fully developed vision.  If your goal is to be a scientist, then getting all the degrees,  working on skill development, small experiences (internships) can be your Goals. Keeping goals not only keeps you on track but also makes the strenuous ideas seem achievable.

Skills

A pure intellectual isn’t enough to achieve success. Skills are a set of abilities an individual uses to walk along with the practical world. It takes practice and time to gain them. For example, a person doesn’t sketch and paint like Pablo Picasso. Everything you have an interest in and learning needs practice. Developing little tricks are useful and is only possible with enough theoretical knowledge and experience with interest is cumulated.

Values

Our moral grounds have helped us stay human for all these decades. Qualities like honesty, Self-respect, hard work, respect for others are a part of your values. They represent you as the individual you are. It helps you enhance your ideas and beliefs that you portray in your work and motivate you to maintain your work ethics.

Introspect and consider the 6 attributes to know what the right thing for you might be. Each of these attributes helps you gain an answer for the next. So, take your time and think. It’s never too late to achieve your goals and success.
