GMAT or Graduate Management Admission Test is an entrance exam taken up by most of the students who aspire to pursue management from abroad. It is a multiple-choice questions-based entrance exam that is globally recognized and is accepted in almost 114 nations across the globe. GMAT is conducted every year. A student is allowed to attempt GMAT examinations 5 times a year with a gap of at least 16 days through career counseling for the GMAT entrance exam.

The exam is categorized into 4 sections:

  • Section A: Verbal
  • Section B: Quantitative
  • Section C: Integrated Reasoning
  • Section D: Analytical Writing Assessment

We will look at each section and its sub-categories briefly and see what are the major topics to focus on through career counseling for the GMAT exam.

Section A: Verbal section

This section consists of 36 multiple-choice questions. the subtopics of this section are Comprehension, Critical Reasoning and analysis, and correcting sentences. The first part of this section consists of a reading passage on any relevant topic. The topic is not set so it can be anything. Thus, proper knowledge of the topic is not that important. This section tests our ability to build relationships and finding correct answers.

The next part of this section is Critical reasoning and analysis which contains almost 14 Multiple choice questions. An argument is given in the exam with 5 multiple-choice questions. A student needs to identify the variables or points that affect or are relevant to the given argument.

The last part of this section is known as the Correction of sentences where the student has to mark that choice correct which he thinks is the most appropriate sentence. Here the student has to use his Grammar and vocabulary skills and find the correct answer.

Section B: Quantitative

In this section, the student has to attempt 31 questions that test his/her mathematical skills. These questions involve basic math like geometry and algebra etc. The kind of questions that can come in this section are:

  • Word problems.
  • Statistics including basic mean, median, and mode.
  • Probability Functions and sequences.
  • Integers and arithmetic problems.
  • Algebra.

In this section the most frequently asked questions include word problems, integers, and algebra.

Section C: Integrated Reasoning

Integrated Reasoning or IR consists of a total of 12 questions. Scoring in this section is done on a scale of 1 to 8. This section consists of 4major types of topics:

1. Analysis of Table

In these types of questions, the student is expected to choose answers from data given in tabular format. The response is in the form of Yes/No or True/False.

2. Interpretations of Graphs

Here the students are provided with a graphical form of data where they have to choose the correct answer by interpreting the graphical data.

3. Multi-source reasoning

This sub-part of the section consists of data that is represented as text or table or chart. The students are expected to collect data from the different tabs provided.

4. Two-Part Analysis

Here the students have to respond in the tabular form from the questions given in the form of multiple choice.

Section D: Analytical Writing Assessment

This section of the exam includes half an hour essay where the student has to provide an Analysis of an Argument. The student critically analyses the argument and give a critique of the argument. This essay is focused to test a person’s grammatical skills and critical analysis skills

These four sections make the GMAT entrance exam. There are certain aspects that make this entrance test unique from others. It is a computer adaptive test which does not enable the student to skip a question and then come back to the end. Also, in this entrance exam, the student is rewarded extra for the correct answers for higher-level questions. This is one of the unique qualities of GMAT as it differentiates on the basis of practical knowledge of the students. This helps Universities to select students accordingly.

One question that arises is that what is a good GMAT score. To answer this question, one of the ideas is to calculate the average GMAT score of those candidates who have been successfully admitted to the university you are applying to. It is because every university has a different cut-off for their MBA program. By taking out the mean, the student gets a base or a rough idea of his goal for the examination. The most important part of the exam is difficult for the people in the quantitative section as most of the Business universities pay more focus on this section. Most of the top universities take an average score of 710 or higher.

GMAT is not an easy exam but puts a student’s skills and practical knowledge at test. This makes it a harder but more productive entrance examination. A good GMAT score makes a student’s academic record look much better and will guarantee admission to top universities globally with the help of career counseling for the GMAT exam.
