The question Science or Commerce stream has been asked plenty of times in the search engines. This has been rolling in the mind of many students who are confused about choosing a stream in which they could settle down happily and become productive. The person you want to see yourself after some years depends on the decision you make regarding this today. To get clarification on this question, I assume you are not passionate about a specific area i.e like Sciences, Commerce, sports, etc., and you want to make your life productive by consulting a proper decision-maker or don’t know which stream to opt which makes your life happier or you want to choose an area which makes you passionate for that area. I presume you are in the middle of high school or in matriculation to make a decision about this question.

First of all, Science is a stream where you can opt for either an Engineering or Medical field. You can even choose some areas like Astronomy etc., by doing M.Sc. If you choose M.P.C (P.C.M) in your classes 11 and 12(Intermediate years) you can go with Engineering, Astronomy, etc., if you want to go in the medical field to become an MBBS Doctor, Ayurvedic Doctor, Dentist, etc., you have to choose Bi. P.C. If you want to become CA, Management Accountant, Company Secretary, etc., choose M.E.C, C.E.C.

I hope my answers for the science and commerce stream will give you a clear picture of the scenario and make you choose a proper stream.

1. Why choose

Science is nothing but the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. (Ref: Google)  If you want to explore yourself in technology, go with Engineering and explore yourself in living beings like humans, animals, plants, microorganisms, etc., go with Medical Sciences. If you are interested in Stars, Planets, Galaxies, and other heavenly bodies, go with Astronomy.

Commerce is the activity of buying and selling, especially on a large scale (Ref: Google). If you want to become a company Manager or Secretary, if you have skills to make a company get more profits, if you want to become a loan assessing officer, accounting, etc., go with commerce.

2. Intricacies

Engineering involves a lot of Math to do. There are tons of concepts that you need to learn and apply those concepts in the real world. If you choose Civil, Mechanical, etc., they have tons of concepts and problems to be solved. I’ll take an example of an Android App Development in CSE. To develop an app you need to learn Core Java, SQL, and  XML language. You need to write programs for every component of its particular use. Later you have to test and deploy it.

If you want to learn about Artificial intelligence, you should have an idea of every Mathematical concept. There are many algorithms to learn and research is needed more. If you go with Bi. P.C, you have tons of Scientific names, chemical formulas, functions of the parts and their reactions, side effects, etc., to remember and analyze. Of course, every bit of the system is required to learn and become experts in Sciences, and the best you perform, the best and helpful results you get from them.  If you are good with any of the above, Science is better for you.

Commerce doesn’t involve a lot of complicated stuff like Sciences. Though it involves Math, the concepts are limited. It involves Math like Statistics, Probability, etc., You can get jobs like Financial Analyst, Financial planner, etc., which doesn’t involve heavy concepts like Engineering concepts. There is other complicated stuff like checking the maintain the financial sheets, reviewing banking payments, Filing of corporate tax returns, etc., I think you have understood this answer. If you think you are good with this stuff or unable to do complicated Math or Science, choose commerce.

3. Competition for both

Coming to Engineering, there are thousands of colleges throughout the country where 17,00,000+ students pass out every year them. Out of them, Tier 1 Universities/Colleges like IIT’s, IISc’s, NIT, BITS, IIIT’s provide high-quality education. Tier 2 Universities/Colleges like Manipal, SRM, OU, etc., provide a similar standard to them. Coming to Tier 3 Universities/colleges which include all the local colleges and other Universities which provide normal standard education. A point to accept that not all students who study in Tier 3 have low standards.

There is a good number of students who have high standards as Tier 1 standard, but due to some indispensable reasons or other reasons like Reservations, not getting proper guidance, etc., they didn’t make it to Tier 1. Coming to Medical, it is too tough than Engineering. There are very fewer colleges for M.B.B.S. I’ve compared the scores of the EAMCET exam(In Telangana) for Engineering and Medical students.

The one who scored 150/160 in EAMCET (for Engineering) has got a state rank of 200 whereas for medical the similar marks scorer got 1400 rank. I think by this info you’ve got an Idea I guess. My point is, as there are many students getting graduated, the quality of Engineering is getting diluted. The employment rate is only 40%-50%. Some may choose to pursue higher studies. The rest remain jobless or do jobs irrelevant to their field. Coming to Mechanical and other non-circuit branches, only 15-30% get jobs in their respective fields. Others, remain jobless or do irrelevant jobs.

Coming to the commerce stream, there is not a high competition like the Science stream. There is less competition compared to Sciences. The top-notch Universities include Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi (SRCC), Hindu College, Delhi, etc.,  You have to write the CAT exam for pursuing higher studies in India for management. There are many employment fields for commerce students as said above.

4. Earnings (Salaries)

I know the first priority is given to the salaries which the company, org pays you. Coming to medical, there will be a high payment to the doctors. There is nothing much to say about medical guys, as you know well about it. Coming to Engineering, CSE has many job opportunities compared to other streams. They get high payment compared to others. Note that, if you study in Tier 1 Universities, there will be many opportunities for most of the streams. Coming to Tier 2 and Tier 3, there will fewer job opportunities for non-circuit branches. Even the pay will less.

Coming to the commerce stream, as I said there will be less competition compared to the Science people. There is a good number of job opportunities like Loan assessing officer, Internal auditor, junior accounts officer, Accounts executive, etc., The pay will be about Rs 20k-22k per month. It is better to crack exams for CA and get a high job position in huge companies where your payment will be more than 50k-80k and above per month.

5. Overseas Opportunities

I think you have an idea about the overseas opportunities for the Science guys. There are hundreds of good universities outside India which provide higher/st standard education, research opportunities in that area you are passionate about. The payment will be 4-5 Lakhs per month (converting from $ to Rs) if you study in the USA. Even Canada, European countries, Australia gives a higher payment for every employed guy. If you are a non-circuit branch-like Mechanical Engineer, go to Germany where there is heavy research in that area. Even other branches have a wide number of opportunities in that country.

Coming to commerce, if you want to go for accountant jobs, there are some countries like Cayman Islands, Austria, Switzerland, Malaysia, etc., which give high salaries to accountant jobs. Though there is not much demand for commerce overseas there are opportunities in above- mentioned countries.

6. Future of Career

Sciences is always challenging where you’ll encounter various problems, situations, etc., which require constant attention, learning new things, and adapting to various new environments. You cannot stay forever with the same knowledge which you’ve possessed from your past. You should always update yourself with the new technologies emerging. If you choose CSE, you have to always learn new programming languages and adapt to new environments to maintain a steady growth of your career. If you go with the non-circuit branches like Mechanical Engineering, most of the fields have reached a saturation point where there is not much growth.  Most of them cannot go further with what they have learned. They should repeatedly do the same work which feels tedious. So, choose Germany as it is the best for Automobile Engineering. Please do research in your areas where you can find more opportunities.

Coming to commerce, as there are many roles for commerce students. The job is always constant. There is not much to update like Sciences. Once you enter into a specific job role, continue in that area or switch to other areas after doing that job. The salary will increase as you gain experience. But, you’ll be paid high if you have higher qualification like CA, CMA, CS. Only commerce qualification cannot fetch you higher pay. You’ll always get high payment when you have higher qualifications (as above) and don’t have stress as sciences in the long term.

7. Admission Fees

Coming to the admission fee for Sciences, the cost of the medical fee is very high, especially for MBBS. The fee structure generally varies from one University/college to another. The MBBS course fee of AIIMS is very low with an annual course fee of total of Rs. 5856/- INR. Likewise, there are some colleges that take a fee of 10 Lakhs-40 Lakhs per annum respectively. If you can able to pay that amount, go head. If you are not that rich or poor but desperately wanting to study MBBS, take a loan from a bank or try other methods. Coming to Engineering, the fee structure is less compared to MBBS. The maximum fee per annum could be 3-4 lakhs per annum, that too in private universities(Tier 2). For local Universities, it would be around Rs 1-2 lakhs per anum.

Coming to commerce, if you take B.com, the fees would be around Rs 30k-50k per annum max(even less also available). If you choose M.com, the fee would be around 12k-20k max(even less also available).  Though there are some people who cannot pay that fee, they should take a loan. If you qualify for CPT and are heading to become CA or other higher posts, you will have a good payment of salary after the completion of the course.

8. The People’s Talk

I think, almost everyone has seen the people who opt for the Science and Commerce stream. If you take Medical and get into MBBS,  you’ll shine like anything in the future. A branch named Pharm. D has almost similar demands like MBBS especially in foreign countries like the USA etc., Even other branches have good value and high job opportunities. Coming to Engineering, we can see that there are many Engineering colleges present in almost every area. Only 10% of the total Engineering colleges in the state(Tier 3 especially) have fine standards and teach Engineering to some standard. Others, just run a business and fetch handsome amounts out of these colleges which is shameless. Most of the college students come to cities for jobs.

Many colleges don’t have on-campus placements. As said if you take, non-circuit branches, finding a job is very difficult as there are only 10-15% freshers jobs on campus that too in very few colleges. Every non-circuit branch-related companies require at least 1-2 years of experience. Some of the jobs you find or do might be irrelevant to your desired area and the experience you gain from them, may not be used further. Coming to CSE, you have many jobs but coming to ECE, though there are some companies related to core, you might get many chances to get placed into CSE related companies. You cannot use the things which you’ve studied in your UG.

Conclusion:

Though people tell many things like taking engineering is not a wise decision, is waste of time, has no worth as there are many engineers already present Bla Bla Bla, always go to the area in which you are passionate for. Many choose to join gov jobs in the future just because they are secured despite choosing their passionate jobs. Though you get a normal degree from a Tier 1 University/College, but an Engineer’s degree has higher respect regardless of any Tier University/college.

It is not the B.Tech’s value getting degraded, it’s the people who are impassionate joining them, its the people with the lowest standard teaching the students and claim that students do not have standard, poor standard directors making downgraded rules and making students forcibly to follow, etc., That is the reason the standard of B.Tech is getting down. You will become a multi-talented individual if you choose the Sciences stream where there is a lot of creativity as new technology emerges where people are doing research in many multiple areas of different kinds. You’ll feel very enthusiastic, fervent, confident, happy if continue going deeper in the Science field.

Many of the above kind of people tell to opt for commerce stream. My intention is not to downgrade the Commerce. Every field has its own value. Commerce is a very different field compared to Engineering. Just because of the things you see happening for most of the Science students, you should not make your decision turn around. Commerce stream is meant for Entrepreneurship, Corporate Accounting, Business Regulatory Framework, Economics, Income Tax. Auditing etc., and Science is meant to become Engineers, Doctors, Astronauts, Entrepreneurs, Scientists, etc.,

Finally, it depends on you with my above answers for science and commerce stream to decide what you want to become.
