1. BROOKLYN NINE-NINE

Brooklyn nine-nine is probably one of the funniest comedy TV series out there. It follows the life of NYPD Detective Jake Peralta who aspires to be cool while doing ground-breaking cop work. It also shows us the lives of Terry, Rosa, Amy, Charles, Gina, Raymond (Holt) and Hitchcock and Scully.

Whilst Brooklyn Nine-Nine has its hilarious and comedic moments, it is not afraid to tackle important issues such as race, corruption, gender equality and homophobia. overall, the show does an excellent job of balancing the tension of sensitive and serious issues with comedic relief and heart-warming scenes.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is praised for breaking barriers with its highly diverse cast. It features people of colour and women in positions of power. For instance, the leading characters include two Latina women and two African American men which is rare in mainstream comedy. Also, the diverse characters are not represented in stereotypical ways. Captain Holt and detective Rosa Diaz are members of the LGBTQ+ community, but are not defined by their sexuality.

2. FRIENDS

Friends is the most well-known show there is. Almost everyone you know must be a fan of friends. What’s not to love? Hilarious characters, comedic storylines, amazing views, and the six inseparable friends. In the space of 10 years, Friends became one of the most popular TV series in history.

It tells the story of the sometimes complicated, and always funny, everyday lives of six close friends – Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, and Joey. Monica’s neurosis, Rachel’s passion for fashion, Joey’s charming stupidity, Chandler’s sarcastic jokes, Ross’s bad luck struck love life, Phoebe’s timeless songs such as Smelly Cat… Each character has unique qualities.

Despite the humour and sarcasm that mark the series, each Friends episode essentially ends with a life lesson. The most important of which, of course, is to always count on your friends, and to not care so much about other people’s opinions.

3. BIG BANG THEORY

Big Bang Theory revolves around the lives of Leonard the short experimental physicist, Sheldon the neurotic theoretical physicist, Howard the Jewish engineer and Raj the Indian astrophysicist as their lives change when the free-spirited, lively and lovable Penny moves next to them.

The characters in the Big Bang Theory are the type of people the Friends cast would make fun of. There is a character for everyone in this show. Dr. Sheldon Cooper is an ( as he describes himself) “once in a generation mind” who grew up in eastern Texas where he started writing academic papers at the age of 5 and started high school at the age of nine.

Dr. Leonard Hofstadter is Sheldon’s roommate, best friend and colleague. His character is defined by his emotional trauma caused by his mother who despite his best efforts, was never able to please throughout his entire life.

An aspiring, but mostly unsuccessful actress, Penny was born on a farm near Omaha and worked at The Cheesecake Factory as a waitress. Initially, she is portrayed as a blonde who only gets her way because of her looks but then as her character develops she becomes more and more successful and gives Leonard a chance at their relationship.

4. FULL HOUSE

Full House is a family show. The content is wholesome and perfect for children and adults of all ages. Most of the plot lines and humour on the show are clear and focuses on the family dynamic as a whole. The cast of Full House were all musically talented.

While the show featured some musical scenes, such as the telethon episode where Stephanie danced to “Love Shack” and the DJ sings a song called “Lollipops and Gummi Bears”, music was never the centre of the show. The show primarily focused on the children and their challenges growing up.

While they occasionally focused on plot lines that affected the adults, such as Danny beginning to date, these plot lines still focused on the effect that these changes had on the family dynamic. With the focus being so heavily based on the children’s experiences growing up, there was always a heart-warming lesson to be learned and the adults have valued bringers of wisdom.
