Let’s start this article first by recollecting our memory of the times when we went out in public places. Keeping in mind that recollection, whenever we happened to be out in any public place, the majority of times we would encounter people occupied with their laptops, talking on mobile phones, scrolling through their cell phones, taking pictures, scrolling mindlessly on social media, and a dozen more fascinating technologically oriented activities.

Let’s be honest, some of us might be doing the very same. In the technology-driven times that we are in right now, it has become nearly unthinkable to imagine our lives without the predominant use of technology. As we all have heard, there are good and bad sides to everything; similarly, as much as technology has positively influenced our lifestyles, it has significant negative impacts too. With the easily available access to technology, it’s not surprising to believe if ‘screen addiction’ is a real thing.

SO, WHAT REALLY IS SCREEN ADDICTION?

Screen addiction, in simple words, can be defined as a state in which a person is heavily dependent upon screen use. So much so, that it impairs an individual’s daily schedule of activities, creativity, social interaction, physical health, emotional stability. In various instances, this alarming level of screen use might seem just fine to some people because, their tolerance level has now risen, and they couldn’t feel good until experiencing the dopamine rush that comes from using digital devices. This alarming level of screen use would interfere with your work, kids would neglect their studies, altogether neglecting sleep and social interaction and engaging on screens at the cost of personal development.

As of now, there are no specific diagnostic criteria regarding screen addiction-oriented behaviors, but ‘screen addiction’ implies some unhealthy behavioral practices which can be interpreted for its treatment. PSU, which is an abbreviation for ‘problematic screen use’, is classified as under-recognized ‘behavioral addiction’.

As per various psychological associations and journals, the vernacular to best describe and classify such behavior is still evolving. Some other recognized terms that one might come across include IAD (Internet Addiction Disorder), SDD (Screen Dependency Disorder), etc. The majority of addictions are determined through the understanding of three processes, viz, urges, heightened tolerance, and withdrawal difficulties.

SLEEP DIFFICULTIES

If you’ve ever been in a situation, in which you weren’t able to fall asleep, so instead of just laying down you decided to scroll through your phone, and later you felt more awake than you were before. This activity needs to be seriously watched. Mobiles and other electronic devices produce blue light that not only stimulates our brain activity level but also seriously hinders the activity of sleep hormone in our body; leading to sleep deprivation and other sleeping disorders like Insomnia.

INCREASED PRONENESS TOWARDS OBESITY

One becomes more prone to becoming obese because of the overuse of digital devices, due to the time that should’ve been devoted to outdoor activities and exercises, which is now sacrificed for unregulated screen overuse. Too much screen use initiates a sedentary lifestyle, which seriously hinders body development due to lack of exercise. The habit of snacking while working on screens also contributes to gaining weight as there is no significant time devoted to engaging in workouts, sports, or outdoor activities.

HINDERED SOCIALISING ABILITIES

It’s a widely accepted feeling that when we’re on our screens, we wouldn’t like to have a company over; or people bothering us while we are in midst of it.
