Social Issues faced by Today’s Teenagers

Technology and development have a huge impact on teenagers. It has amplified the struggles of the young generation. The problems of today’s teens are different from that of earlier. The pervasiveness of social media and digital communication has changed the way teens interacts with their peers and romantic fantasies. Due to the overuse of technology, teenagers lack interpersonal communication skills and are unable to pick up on social cues. The overindulgence of teens in social media and virtual friends have changed their way of communication, dating, learning, exercise and sleeping .

Here are some most prevalent social issues that are faced by today’s young generation which has resulted in everyday struggles:

1. Anxiety, Stress and Depression

Nowadays, 30% of adolescents are prone to depression. Teenagers usually spend too much time on electronic gadgets. This has resulted in less in-person activities with their friends, parents, relatives such as sports, family gatherings, which can ward off depression. They feel like ‘fear of missing out”, which eventually leads to loneliness and stress. However, depressive disorders are treatable. Teenagers need utmost attention. Whenever you notice a change in your ward’s behaviour, do contact her medical physician or any mental health professional. Because it can lead to dangerous conditions if ignored from the beginning.

2. Usage of Drugs

Nowadays teens are very much addicted to marijuana, cigarettes etc. Make sure to have a regular talk with your child clearly about the consequences of drug consumption. Also, inform them about the dangers of prescribed drugs. Teens never think before developing an addiction. they are not aware of the risks associated with overdosing on drugs. It is better to provide full knowledge about drugs.

3. Sexual activities

Today’s young generation misinterpret the meaning of love as sexual love. Parents may not be aware of their child’s sexual activeness. It is better if you talk to your teen about love, sex and its consequences, even if they are no involved in such activities.

4. Alcohol Consumption

Give your child full knowledge about the risks of underage drinking. Alcohol can result in a serious toll on a teenager developing brain. Never feel shy to express your disapproval regarding alcohol consumption.


5. obesity and other problems

In the age of playing outside with friends, running and cycling, teens are seen to indulge more in electronic gadgets and social media. Instead of interacting with friends and neighbours, they tend to make virtual friends. These are affecting their physical health also. Teens are becoming overweight and obese with making them prone to other diseases like thyroid, diabetes etc. Tell your kids to keep them fit instead of overindulging in social media.

6. Persecution

The excessive involvement of teens in social media has made harassment more pervasive. Cyberbullying has replaced bullying that teens commonly experience. Make your children well aware of bullying and talk to them regularly. Teach them the proper ways to fight against bullying. This will help your child to deal with harassments.


7. Academic Problems

Teens face a lot of pressure in their academic field and are often seen to drop out of higher studies. It is necessary to give them support in their education and assist them if they face any problems.

8. Social Media

Each and everything has a bad and good effect. Social is a boon for us, but at the same time is a curse too. Social media can expose teenagers to cyber-bullying. Give them proper education on cybercrimes. Social media can harm friendships and mental health. Teach your child how to navigate social media healthily and keep eye on all the latest apps and websites to keep yourself updated.

9. Peer Pressure

Peer pressure is not a new issue but got a new turn in this age of social media. More and more teens are pressurized into having physical love, taking drugs, and bullying others too. Make your child capable of resisting these peer pressures. And if they make poor choices, get ready to help them out. Always make sure that your kids are not afraid to come to you and confess their mistakes. Try to show a friendly attitude with them.

These are some of the common issues faced by teenagers, which can be easily prevented by their parent’s support and guidance. Teens need utmost care in this growing age. So, always talk to them in a friendly manner and show your love and affection for them. This will prevent them from opting for ill habits. talk to them about everything clearly, so that they think twice before committing a mistake. try to be non-judgmental, and understand them. Teach them the value of family and love. This will always prevent your child from dangers.
