Ayurveda is considered to be the oldest healing science and is often called the “Mother of All Healing”. The knowledge was originated in India more than 5000 years ago. It is believed to be the source of all system of modern medicine. Ayurvedic treatment starts with an internal purification process and combines products mainly derived from plants followed by a special diet, yoga and exercise, and lifestyle.

Ayurveda is still considered India’s traditional holistic system of medicine and can be a good career option in the medicinal field. Its study uses a range of treatments, including Panchakarma (‘five actions’), yoga, massage, acupuncture, and herbal medicine, to promote a healthy lifestyle and well-being.

Eligibility to study Ayurveda

Ayurveda may be old, but it’s evolving with time and catching up gradually with modern science. To study it a student must have passed their 10+2 with science stream having the subject combination of PCB – Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in class 12th examination. The student also has to clear medical entrance exam like NEET, OJEE, KEAM, etc. to get admission into Ayurvedic Colleges.

To become an Ayurvedic doctor student must obtain their graduation degree in Bachelor’s of Ayurveda Medical and Surgery (BMAS). BMAS is a five and a half year course including one year of mandatory internship. It is an integrated course that covers variety of subjects of traditional Ayurveda and modern medical systems.

After obtaining the underground degree in BMAS, students can pursue a postgraduate in Masters of Surgery in Ayurveda (MS Ayurveda). MS Ayurveda is a three-year course that deals with the study of different surgical techniques, surgical disorders, surgical emergency management, trauma, etc.

Branches Of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is categorised into eight different branches it, and collectively it is known as Ashtang Ayurveda. The eight branches of are mentioned below:

1. Kayachikitsa (General Medicine)

This branch of Ayurveda mainly deals with the diagnosis and treatment of general diseases such as Fever, Diabetes etc. Kayachikitsa is concerned with different therapies i.e., shodhana (purifying), Shamana (pacifying) and Rasayana (rejuvenating) for the elimination of the root cause of the illness.

2. Balachikitsa (Obstetrics/Pediatrics)

Balachiktsa is a branch that deals with neonatal care, infant feeding, diet for the newborn baby, daily and seasonal regime. It also deals with diseases in children including nutrition of children, immunization etc.

3. GrahaChikitsa (Psychiatry)

This branch of Ayurveda deals with the study of psychology and treats psychosomatic diseases like insanity, epilepsy and diseases caused by evil spirit and ghosts. Treatment methods include medicines, diet regulation and yogic methods.

4. SalyaChikitsa (Surgery)

SalyaChiktsais deals with various surgical operations and techniques using different surgical instruments and devices. It is a significant research branch of Ayurveda that imparts an in-depth understanding of the principles of modern surgery.

5. ShalakyaChikitsa (ENT & Cephalic Diseases)

It is also called UrdhyaangaChikitsa. The ShalakyaChikitsa branch of Ayurveda deals with the diseases situated above the clavicle like disorders of Ear, Nose, Throat, Eye, Dental, Head and Neck.

6. VishaChikitsa(Toxicology)

This branch of Ayurveda deals with the study of poison, management of poison, the conditions of poisoning and antidotes to poison. This includes the treatment of diseases caused by poisons and toxins like spoilt food, animal, reptiles and insect bites etc.

7. Rasayana (Rejuvenation Therapy)

This branch deals with the prevention of diseases and promotes a long and healthy lifestyle. The Rasayana therapy helps nourish the whole body by strengthening the essence of all food we take and which the body assimilates. It also increases our health, intellect and beauty.

8. Vajeekarana (Aphrodisiac Treatment)

This branch of Ayurveda deals with desired progeny with the means of increasing sexual vitality and efficiency. Vajikarana promotes the sexual capacity and performance of an individual.
