Dear Siddhi, 

A laboratory attendant, under prompt supervision performs standard and semiskilled work in the accumulation,

arrangement and appropriation of field tests, support of research center gear and crystal; performs related work as required.

The tasks a Laboratory Assistant, Clinical is expected to perform include:

  • Arranging and setting various instruments and apparatus in clinical laboratory for conducting pathological and bacteriological studies
  • Conducting routine tests of blood, urine, sputum, etc. for medical purposes and for diagnosis of diseases
  • Setting required apparatus and equipment, in position and arranging necessary electrical connections
  • Preparing standard solutions, reagents, media for culture, etc. by weighing, grinding, mixing and dissolving prescribed proportion of sample or chemical in water or other liquids
  • Collecting samples such as water, urine, blood, sputum, etc. in clean and sterile containers or slides
  • Assisting in conducting routine test of urine, stool, sputum or blood
  • Mounting and preparing slides with specimens for microscopic study by physicians and specialists
  • Washing, cleaning and drying apparatus and equipment after use and maintaining them in proper working condition
  • Keeping required chemicals and solutions readily available
  • Maintaining records and cleanliness of laboratory

The minimum qualification is a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT)

 

The key competencies are:

  • Skilled in handling tissue and fluid samples
  • Efficient in analysing samples to generate data that can be used by doctors or researchers
  • Efficient in recording lab tests results and accordingly assisting research and technical activities
  • Efficient in transcribing materials, filing and maintaining all pathology and clinical laboratory files
  • Proficient in preparing written documentation and files as required by the profession
  • Effectively conducting lab tests
  • Skilled in preparing requisition forms and record of specimen to be sent to reference laboratory
  • Skilled in co-ordinating with mother blood bank for supply of blood and blood components
