The simple answer is- it depends on the nation that a graduate wants to build up a career in. But, as an unspoken rule, we never stop at the simple answer. So, let’s elaborate this point a bit.

By the end of the 20th century, lawyers from India had already started seeking jobs in foreign law firms. There was a crowd leaving the nation. Who made this crowd? The topnotch lawyers made this crowd. So much so, now these foreign law firms hire the creme straight out of the top law colleges in India. This trend that has trickled on is promising for the aspiring lawyers.

One of the reasons that foreign firms desire Indian lawyers is because of Indian law is Common in nature. This means that the law is created and refined by judges based on previous relevant cases. Moreover, Indian Law students have a good command over English and are at par with their counterparts across the globe when it comes to legal knowledge. A spokesman for an English firm is also known to have made a positive remark about legal knowledge and commercial awareness. Indian lawyers also considered an asset by firms who have trade interests in India.

This explains the significance of the question, ‘ Am I eligible for practicing law abroad if I have studied law in an Indian university?’ And also the significance of Indian graduate lawyers overseas. However, one cannot simply expect to study here and start practicing law without. It doesn’t escape common knowledge and sense that every nation has a different law and order system. Therefore, one has to understand and be well-versed with the law and order of the particular nation that they are seeking to practice law in.

The direct answer is, yet again, different for every nation. While Dubai doesn’t allow it, there are clauses to the effect for nations like UK and USA.

An Indian solicitor in United Kingdoms is a lawyer who has passed the QLTT which is conducted by the law society of UK. QLTT stands for Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test. The Law Society of UK issues an eligibility certificate to be able to take this test. This certificate issued on the basis of practice in any nation with the Common Law system.

While in the United States, one has to be a member of their Bar to be able to practice law in this nation. The US also has its own test and procedure for allowing lawyers from India and nations alike to practice in it.
