A veterinarian is a physician for animals and apractioner of veterinary medicine. The profession is suitable for those who love animals and has a compassionate predisposition for animals. The aim of veterinary education is to produce vetrrinarians capable of using their skills to improve association of humans and animals by making the later free from their suffering and disease. The primary role of a veterinarian is prevention of diseases not only among animals but also to stop diseases from being transmitted from animal to mankind or vice versa. Food/feed, general public safety,animal health and welfare, environmental hygeine etc are his other responsibilities. Veterinarians also helps in environmental hygeine.

Organised State farms for managing livestock farms
Semen Bank/ Sperm Station- where quality bulls are kept
Poultry Farms for managing egg farms, hatcheries, chick rearing units
Meat/ Milk Processing Plants- for supervising of hygienic collection and distribution of milk
Polyclinics- where specialized service like surgery, special diagnostics, specialized treatment etc is given
Disease investigation Centers- Survey disease profile and investigate any occurence of a major disease.
Biological products or vaccine institutions- prepare quality control and distribute vaccines and biological.
Disease eradication schemes/ check posts/ vaccination camps
Public Health Labs- investigation of disease transmissible from animals to man and vise versa.
Local Bodies/Municipalities/ Panchayats
Slaughter houses/ cattle pounds/ public health laboratories
Zoos and wildlife centers
Animal resource development under panchayati raj
Centralized Sectors
Army ( Remount veterinary corps)- to train and look after horses, dogs, camel etc in the forces
BSF/Police- to look after horses, dogs , camels etc i the forces
ICAR- coordination and funding of animal based research
Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Ministry of Agriculture- for administrative management & coordination of veterinary service
Quarantine units- these are international check posts preventing entry of exotic diseases like mad cows, diseases of fowl influenza
