Best option between MEng in Petroleum/oil and gas Engineering and MEng in Chemical Engineering

I have completed my graduation in Chemical Engineering and now I am looking for Post graduate program. Since I am very much interested in Oil and gas sector, I want to pursue MEng in Petroleum/Oil and Gas engineering in Canada. But I am having a doubt and confusion weather MEng in Petroleum Engg is suitable for students with Chemical background, are the subjects similar, and which are the best colleges in Canada offering this course?

Petroleum/Oil and Gas Industry is one of the important industry for a chemical engineer to start his career with especially in a country like Canada. There are lot of job prospects in this field.

As a person who has completed an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering you have the option to choose masters in Petroleum Engineering Or Chemical Engineering. The choice entirely depends on your personal preferences and career ambitions. If you are really choosy to start a career in Oil and Gas only, It would be worth to take a MEng in petroleum engineering. Doing a MEng in chemical engineering will open doors to other sectors as well which are equally important in Canada like pharmaceutical and biotechnology, food and agriculture etc.. During your MEng degree you can even specialize in courses which are very important for oil and gas as well if you want. As far getting a job in Oil and Gas is concerned, it entirely depends on skill sets and engineering knowledge.

Option 1: Master of engineering (MEng) which is completely taught masters where you take courses to get all your credits for the degree.

Option 2: Master of Advanced Science (MASc) which is a research based where you complete a thesis also along with taking the necessary courses for credit.

I would highly recommend to choose a MASc degree if you are interested in research as it will definitely give an added edge to your resume if you have done some research thesis in area of interest like Oil and Gas when you apply for job. More over it will help you to network with industrial partners and collaborators who work in this area through your thesis supervisor and research group.

Meng in petroleum engineering is offered in some universities like university of Calgary, Dalhousie university and all. There are also very good chemical engineering departments that offer good masters programs in chemical engineering like University of Waterloo, university of Toronto, University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of British Columbia etc... but i would highly recommend you to contact the program coordinators or alumni of the departments for more info before choosing the program.
