Banking sector in India is of two types. One is public sector banks and another is private sector banks. Today private sector banks are at part with public sector banks and are now superseding the government banks in almost all aspects like employee strength, turnover, profits, margins, loans, deposits, etc.

Choosing banking sector is a good thinking. If you wish to enter into public sector banks, then you need to appear for IBPS exam or the Probationary Officers exam. Probationary Officers exams and seats are announced not every year but as per the requirement of the respective bank with approval of RBI. Probationary Officers exams are much tougher than IBPS exams. This exam is highly competitive and you require atleast first class through out from SSC to masters degree.
IBPS is an exam meant for entering into the public sector banks as clerks or back office executives. This exam is comparatively simpler than PO exam.

For entering into the private sector banks and to have a stable and growing career, you need to acquire professional qualifications like Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accountancy, MBA, Financial Management PG, Treasury Management, Forex Management, Law, etc. These are most sought qualifications by the private banks. There are also PG diplomas by collaboration of institute and banks which make you enter into the private banks after completion of the PG course directly. You can tap this option also.
