Glad to hear your interest in doing a PhD. PhD is the highest academic achievement and completing it you get a 'Doctorate' so that you can add 'Dr' prefix in front of your name. I am Gomathi and I have been academic and career counsellor since 23 years. I am happy to help you today. I see you have got MCom with First class from India. May I ask you when did you graduate with your MCom degree and what were you doing since graduation? As you want to do a PhD, please see the following steps.
1. You can certainly do a PhD in Newzealand as you have a Masters degree with First class. So you have passed the entry requirement. Congrats on that.
2. Now ask yourself on what topic you want to do a PhD. Do you want to do a Phd on commerce/accounts/finance/management? PhD students should identify a research topic and write a research proposal of minimum 1000 words and maximum 3000 words. If you are unable to frame a research topic, ask yourself which subject you enjoyed the most in your MCom degree. Also try going to your MCom department and having a chat with any professor you think will guide you. You can also read latest journals and articles for the subject you are interetsed in researching in your PhD. It is a 100% research degree and you should manage completing it within three years as this is the normal time period required to finish your PhD.
3. after you find a research topic and written a research proposal, find the universities who run your PhD program. If you can say the subject of PhD study, i can guide you even better.
4. Next go to university websites and contact the professors working in the department, who is also researching similar area of yours. Contact these professors. Email them with your cv and research proposal and request if they can supervise your phd for three years. If they like your proposal, they will give their consent. Then you can do the next steps to send application forms.
5. You should write IELTS exam to prove your capability in English language. I think you should score min 6.5 overall in IELTS exam. You can contact British council in your city and they will guide you to register and complete this test.
6. Ask recommendation letters from your college professors who know you well. They will give their recommendation statement on the college official headed paper. You can scan them and send it with application form.
7. Some of the good universities in Newzealand are Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago, Waikato. Go to these university websites and see if they have your subject in PhD level. Else write back to me and I can do the help for you in my next reply.
8. Also consider how you are going to pay your fees and maintenance costs for three years in NewZealand. It takes three years minimum to complete the study. Please write back the subject name you want to do a PhD and i will help you even further.
