As an automobile engineer your main job is to design an automobile which would have everything latest but would be cost effective. You are mainly involved in designing, systems and machines for automobiles.

Designs usually are initially done in terms of drawings,then a lot of permutations and combinations are done to reach the final product.

Agreed that your work is to be creative,innovative and research minded, but definitely its not a one man show.
There would be other people involved.

Moreover you need to get your market research done, may be someone does that for you, but after that brainstorming is required to see the viability of the product and its need.
Next step would be the deigning part.If you are the engineer, you aint working all alone,it is a group. Again it would require brainstorming. Ideas accepted and rejected and why.
Followed by explaining the manufacturing guy how it is to be made and what are the requirements for it. Again here you get into supervising role. And finally market it to the masses.Or rather launch the product.
The entire process requires an interaction, and interaction is a key to Interpersonal skills.

Agreed that there is not much of interaction required, as all would get into their work then get along and brainstorm and again get back to their job. But a little interaction is definitely done.

So be ready with your interpersonal skills polished, if you wish to be a successful Automobile engineer.
