Hello There! Looking at your query, I am happy that you wish to be prepared and ready with the software programmes relevant to the Civil Engineer and which will help you get a good job in the civil engineering field.

I am an Educationist and have been couselling many students from the fields of engineering / management / law / commerce for more than seven years now and also I have been invovled in teaching and writing on career management for more than 10 years now. I have also been visiting many engineering colleges and speaking to thousands of students of civil / mechanical for their career enhancement.

I am happy that you are Civil Engineer since I believe that you Engineers are the only ones who literally build the nation in terms of infrastructure and housing. No other career option is available which build the nation. Therefore you should be proud that you are Civil Engineer and contributing to nation building every day.

Today for a fresh Civil Engineer, the TIME IS HARD and there is lot of site work involved for civil engineers. However, today there is a need for Civil Engineers like you to enhance your career and skills in order to become employable and learning software programmes related to construction and civil is very important.
Today the hard fact is a fresh engineer gets low end and low paid jobs and this results in uncertain career growth and also you remain for years in technical field. Today industry requires something else apart form technical skills and that is Construction and Project Management. Please remember that this Construction and Project Management is not about technical aspects but more of managerial aspects. Today construction and infrastructure industry requires Ten Lakh (10,00,000) project management professionals annually. Also the investments in construction and infrastructure industry are required upto the tune of $One Trillion and half of this is expected to come from the private sector companies. Therefore this suggests that there are tremendous job opportunities in private companies like Larsen & Toubro, etc.

As far as learning software programmes is concerned, you should be very well proficient with software applications like Primavera, MS Project, AutoCAD, ERP & MIS, Stata, MS Excel. But learning just software programmes cannot help you get a decent job as a civil engineer.

As mentioned above a Civil Engineer wanting to enhance his career to managerial side should do Post Graduate courses in Construction and Project Management which are of management and business angle and not of technical nature.

One Institute which offers Placement oriented Two Year Full Time PG Diploma in Infrastructure Business focused on Construction and Project Management is Samvit School of Infrastructure Business, based in Pune Maharashtra. (www.samvitinfra.edu.in) This course will train you in Construction and Project Management but also in software programmes as mentioned above.

Hope you will aim for a good jump in your civil engineering career by such courses.

Best Luck.
