Dear aspirant

thank you for approaching counselors at meracareerguide to seek our advice. From your question i understand you are a commerce student. You say you are interested in Economics and Archaeology. I appreciate that you are able to narrow down your subject interest on one particular subject at this age and want to know its job prospects too.

First of all lets consider why Economics? You need to take a paper and pen and write down why you want to study Economics at college level. You should then see what stream of economics particularly interests you as there are various economics like environmental economics, trade economics, food economics, tourism economics, health economics, education economics and many more. It is also advisable to go through the syllabus of BA Economics at a university you want to study and most importantly you should have studied Economics at 12th level. Lots of universities offer BA Economics if you are at least from a commerce back ground and yes you are qualified to apply for BA Economics.
Economists
Next History and Archaeology. They both go hand in hand as you will study in depth about Archaeology if you choose to study BA History. You can also study MA Archaeology after a BA History and the job prospects are relatively good too. As an archaeologist you can find work either at government or private natural resource centre or museums. You can engage with international archaeological research groups to explore a particular place. The work also extends to research report writing other than only exploring this requires to have developed good communication skills too. There are many organisations in India and abroad that recruit students with Archaeology background. Please remember that you create jobs and jobs dont create you. So any work you do with your interest will naturally help you perform better at work.

Finally a career in commerce. You believe you arent interested in commerce and now write down on a paper why you dont like it. This list will help you achieve more clarity on yourself and your perspectives for subject. Next take a psychometric assessment available from this website. This test will test your personality type and will tell you if you are suitable to pursue commerce/ history archaeology/ Economics. Show the test results to your parents and sit and talk to them to arrive at a conclusion. Finally, please go with the subject that the test recommends you and also where your true interest lies. This test will ensure you if you are taking up the right path or not. All the best.
