NID, on its website describes its graduation program as --- Graduate Diploma Programme In Design (GDPD) --- which sounds conflicting as it has both, 'graduate' and 'Diploma' in it. Please explain whether it is a graduate degree or simply a diploma ?

Hi There,
An Institute depending on its affiliation to UGC, can be an Autonomous or a deemed University.
NID though had UGC recognition, but was an Autonomous body, hence was unable to label their course as Degree and hence labelled them as Diploma.
Here the recognition is based on different parameters like:
But cutting the long story short, as Surabhi madam has mentioned and it has been mentioned on the website too, NID has got the approval of the government and has been labelled as "Institute of National Importance", and so now henceforth they would be awarding Degree to their student.

Very very good question!
NID is a Institute of National Importance, therefore whatever the name is, you need not be worried. If the course is full time and is 4 years, definitely it has value.
Even IIMs till today cannot give MBA or PhD as a degree. They give PGP as a Diploma. Only IITs till now are allowed to give degrees and PhDs since they are National Institutes under an Act of Parliament.Even Chartered Accountancy does not have a word of Diploma or Degree, still it has masters degree equivalence under the Law.
If you get admission in NID, you need not worry about anything. Focus on learning and success will follow.
