Yes academic record matters a lot specially for freshers. Most of the big companies (including Big 4) shortlist their applicants on academic records. Once a person has gained some experience and good command over his field then companies may ignore his / her academic background. It's advisable if you don't have a good academic background then start your career with a small / medium firm and after gaining some experience apply for big firms.

Shortlisting criteria for big brands are:
1) Academic Background
2) Aptitude Test
3) Group discussion
4) Personal Interview ( HR - General round )
5) Personal Interview ( Technical round )
6) Personal Interview ( Director round )
7) Final Selection ( Offer letter )

Shortlisting criteria for small firms:
1) Academic Background ( Only if many people have applied for the job )
2) Personal Interview
3) Final Selection
Hope you find the above information useful.
