Hi praveen,

CSIR-UGC NET Exam for Science stream is conducted by CSIR for lectureship and research fellowship. Exam is conducted twice a year in June and December.

This year June date is over. You can appear for December 2011 exam. Forms will is available from October-November 2011.


The clearance of exam will allow you to opt lectureship and research fellowship across India.

SET is another exam for lectureship conducted by individual states and you can opt lectureship within the appeared state.

Good to know you have developed interest in teaching professions at the University level. There are two possible ways where you can make this dream of yours possible.


1. Pass UGC NET qualification:
As you have completed a two year MSc degree, you are eligible to write National eligibility test (UGC NET) exam. The UGC NET exam is being conducetd twice a year, one in the month of June and the other in December. You should aim to sit during one of these exam intakes and pass the exam. Once you pass the exam, you are qualified to work as a Lecturer in any college across the nation. So once you start your role as a Lecturer, you will take upto three to five years to become an Assistant Professor and then become a Professor after 8-10 years of work experience.

However there are certain eligibility conditions that you need to meet in order to write and qualify the UGC NET exam.
1. You need to have passed your MSc with a minimum 55% without rounding off, meaning your percentage should not be like 54.5%. You need to have passed the MSc with exact 55% and above to be eligible to sit for the UGC NET exam.

2. However if you are from the creamy layer like the SC/ ST/ disability candidates you need to have a minimum of 50% in your MSc without rounding off.

3. You should sit for the UGC NET only in the subject of your postgraduation only, meaning you should sit for the UGC NET exam only in Zoology subject.

So once you pass the UGC NET exam, you might be given roles either as Lceturer or Assistant Professor, depending on the university that recruits you.

2. Pass a Doctoral degree qualification:
In case you wish to have a higher research degree, then you may opt to sit for a Doctoral degree like the PhD in Zoology. Having a PhD degree is often recommendable as it keeps your professor career stable. The growth opportunities for a professor with the PhD are more compared to professors only with a masters degree. So it is always a wise decision to study for a PhD. To apply for PhD Zoology in India, you need to meet the following eligibility criteria.

1. Pass MSc with minimum 55% or 50% if you are from reserved category like the SC, ST, disability.
2. Pass UGC NET JRF Junior research fellowship position.
3. Write the eligibility entrance test depending on the university you want to study your PhD.
For example: All the IIT's demand you write GATE and NET exam where as the rest of the universities demand you qualify the UGC NET plus their own entrance test.

With this criteria you can apply for the PhD in Zoology and once you pass the PhD, you are eligible to start your position directly from Assistant Professor role.
